ok so on a picture of the underside of the 1420 i saw the label "strike zone" next to a little rubber pad thing
i also noticed this on my dad's D610 buisiness laptop. what is it and how does it work? i just checked my inspiron 8600 and it doesn't have it, and neither does my brother's e1505

hmm only one way to find out, hit that spot with a hammer and see what happens, you might win a prize.

well i mean besides the "obvious" that it protects your hard drive. i don't see how a little rubber pad can do any better than not having a rubber pad there. I googled it but didn't really find much info.

From my observation on the older Inspirons, it is just a metal plate with rubber feet (that you saw) to absorb the shocks.
On the Latitude, the bottom is already made out of metal alloy, and there is a rubber stand.
Observed similar design (rubber pad / metal plate) in IBM and HP business notebooks.
edit: just checked the new pics of 1520, the StrikeZone on 1520 looks nearly identical to D620. Except the D620 has one extra rubber pad under the SmartCard reader.
hard drive shock protection pad thing?
