I could see a few things happening here...

    1) Did you put the laptop in checked luggage? If so, some stuff probably got loose. Try reseating the HDD and RAM, even if it wasn't in checked bags.
    2) Check the AC adapter labels. It will say 120-240V if it does work with 240V.
    3) Was there a recent power surge, when did it last work?
    4) Its possible that the power distribution lines where your dad is are not good...some of them can have varying voltages by 25% or more (so 240 might have spiked to 240-300 for a brief moment). When did the notebook last work? This probably would only happen if your dad is in a really poor or hard to reach region though.
    5) Does it turn on with just the battery in it? Does the battery have a charge?...if so, but the notebook does not turn on, then something is definitely wrong.

hey greg, the notebook still works with another adapter but its used for other home appliances and its too big, he cant carry it with him, hes just charging it from home and using it outside. im wondering if theres a way to get the dell ac adapter fixed.

What do you mean another adapter for home appliances? I imaging that the Dell AC adapter uses the plug that is standard for either the USA or the EU, so you'd probably just have to contact Dell to get a power cable for that region and it shouldn't require a new AC adapter.

This other adapter could be the problem too ya know.

i will contact dell and make them send me a international power cable, the other adapter my dad was using coverts to 115 volts i really doubt it caused any problems.

Depends. Did that adapter use an actual transformer, or did it use stepped waveform output? Stepped waveforms are not good for computer equipment, and it might have fried the AC adapter.

I'm just trying to throw a few possibilities out just in case.

Dell A/C adaptor should work with 220-240V. I traveled to HK where uses 220V. I just put on the power head adaptor, it works fine.
