Hey guys! I'm new here in notebookreview. I had a problem with my Dell Inspiron 1520 and I hope you guys can help me. My LCD screen is broken although laptop system is still functioning, so i'm currently using a TV screen LCD by connecting a VGA cable to see the video/graphics output. And this has been going for 2 years. And now, I want to fix it by myself.

You may be wondering why should I bother when I have been working with this set up for the last 2 years. Well, I want change. I want to be mobile again, and not get stuck in one place coz my back hurts :( . And since I don't have enough budget to get a new one, I chose to buy just the broken part.

Just recently I stumbled on a local forum here in the internet, almost same with this forum but just located in the phils, a fellow member posted a FOR SALE category of Dell Inspiron 1520 for a cheaper price because he's only selling the laptop cover/case, lcd screen panel, keyboard, battery (excluding the hard drives, DDR, charger/power). Just what you see outside. And I had this idea of trying to fix this on my own. This is a rare opportunity for me to replace my lcd screen panel with ANOTHER Dell Inspiron 1520. So I thought this will be easy. My problem is, my model of Dell Inspiron 1520 DOES NOT have a built-in cam, whereas for the other Dell 1520, it has.

My questions are: Are the two compatible with regards to lcd screen panel? Can I just transfer the whole display assembly part and then transfer it to my working dell model? i'm concerned about the integrated camera wirings, where should I connect it? will the camera works knowing my working system doesn't have built in camera?

I've been watching tutorial videos over youtube and other websites with tutorials/guides on how to disassemble the specific parts, but i just want to be sure that i will be doing the right thing and not cause damage to my working dell 1520.

I really hope you will share your ideas to help me get through this.

    Thanks!

If the screen assembly you are buying came from another 1520, it will work with your 1520. It does not matter if it has the webcam module or not.

Thanks commander wolf! :) It did worked. :D
By the way, I'm curious. Can I replace a dead laptop motherboard with a desktop mobo? I had this crazy idea in mind.

Nope the form factor will not work (IE ports won't line up with your chassis ports), not worth the time or hassle.

    Hi sassy_angel,

As Tsunade_Hime mentioned the laptop motherboard will not be compatible with the desktop. It is not only the chassis but setting up the power supply may also be difficult.

    Thanks & Regards
