avast. Its free and its far better than anything that you can buy. It has a remarkably small footprint on your system resources and also it updates fairly often. I would also suggest spybot if your obsessed like me just to keep your browsing clean. It's also very small and only does stuff when you tell it to. Otherwise it just sits quietly and monitors your system. It asks permission anytime a program wants to change a registry setting too so that you know what is getting added to your system.

If you don't need that much security(chances are you probably don't) just download avast.

I second Avast, its free, very lightweight, good detection rate and it updates itself about 3-4 times a day.

    I also use Avast.

I used to always use Norton, but tried Avast since it was free - and Ive never looked back. Small footprint, low system resource usage, and being free? You cant complain!!!

The last time we got hit with a virus at work (we use Sophos at work, which is Enterprise level software) my laptop was the only one that remained clean, since I was the only one with Avast!!
