I got both screens, planning to get the wxga+ screen replaced.

left one is wxga, right one is wxga+. You can easily tell wxga looks brighter, cleaner, no graininess at all.
wxga+ is so grainy it makes the screen look darker. wxga has a warmer tone. Pictures on wxga+ looks horrible,
especially if you plan to do some photo editing, it looks like there are noises all over the picture and one step darker than wxga (both at max brightness). the wxga+ is auo panel.

    EDIT:
    left:wxga (1280x800) truelife VS. right: wxga+ (1440x900) truelife
    both at max brightness
keep in mind the wxga+ screen is a auo panel, I assume other panels on vostro 1500 would look closer to a wxga one

    Whats up with this?
Will my 15,4-tums UltraSharp™ widescreen WSXGA-skärm (1 680x1050) TFT-skärm med TrueLife™ look as the one to the right?
Or is it user fallacy perhaps ;D... Vista vs. XP.. even.
I've read that the platform Santa Rosa is not fully compatible with XP yet and that it requires greater knowledge to get it working properly.

Please retake the images, running exactly the same software on both, please.

I Swapped the HDs of the two, and now I have a few new pics with xp on wxga, vista on wxga+. The reason I swapped the HD is the vostro 1500 on the left will freeze from time to time, and it seems to be a Hard Drive problem.
When I take out the HDs, I see one is fujitsu (problematic one), the other is toshiba, and the toshiba one seems to be running quieter.

Rest assured my screen is nothing like that at all.

You need to understand that the glass is always going to trap a tad bit of light. However in the topic posters photos for a fact he didnt turn up the brightness all the way up as he shouldve.,

The wxga is the antiglare screen. its all about preference. theres no glass over that matte screen.

Wow. The pictures are loading fine through Opera, and the quality comparison between the two are almost polar opposites in this mans opinion!

That's of real concern for a perceived (and payed for) 'upgrade' to your hardware.

On the plus side, my desired m1330 does nothing but WXGA. :)

For people who are posting with a Vostro 1400, please understand that you have a 14.1 inch screen and it has nothing to do the 1500 or Inpiron 1520. You may have a great WXGA+ screen (if they came out with new ones, in my recollection there wasn't a single acceptable 14.1 screen on the market around 3 months ago).

As for the 15.4" WXGA+ (1440x900) and WSXGA (1680x1050), I would advise people to stay away from them. The graininess is almost certainly to do with the glossy coating, so if find a matte screen with high resolution, you might be ok. The only good 15.4 screens I've seen are the 1280x800 ones found in all laptops (even cheap $400 ones), with or without Trulife/Reflective type display. (Besides the Macbook Pro LED displays, which are absolutely stunning).

I feel very fortunate, my 1705 1920 X 1200 True Life (LP) and my 1520 1680 x 1050 (SEC) True Life are each Stunning and equal.
So there are good ones out there.

I just contacted Dell, and they would ship me an replacement in a week with next day shipping. Hopefully this one will not be grainy. here are the prices of parts of my replacement:
    223-1242 Vostro 1500, Intel Core 2 Duo T5470, 1.6GHz, 800Mhz FSB, 2M L2 Cache $442.00

I recently ordered and received two inspiron 1420s - one for me, one for my sister. The one for my sister has the SEC4457, while mine has the AUO1447. The difference side-by-side is very noticeable - the SEC has barely any graininess at all, while the AUO is extremely grainy. (both are 1440x900)

Also, when looking at them from an angle high above the screen, the colors on the SEC stay (relatively) normal, while whites and other light colors turn black on the AUO. I'm going to see if I can get dell to replace the AUO one with a new panel.

I got the replacement on Friday, and have made a decision to keep the
replacement (it has a LG Philips wxga+ screen). I made a new thread on this
    issue with some new pictures.
If I were you, I would return the one you got with AUO DEFINITELY. Cuz I
now believe the graininess issue can definitely be avoided by getting an
replacement (assuming the new one comes with a NON-AUO screen).

I ordered the Vostro 1400 performance package because that is the best value and they only give you the choice of the XGA+ with Truelife. I really hope I don't get a grainy monitor. Are the grainy monitors that common with the 1400's?

Hmm I agree there is a difference between these two.... But did you try fiddling out with the gamma settings to get better clarity ? I believe it could improve the quality a bit atleast.....

No.. this just affirms that the AUO is crap. Many who get the SEC or LG panels have better things to say. Dell MUST quit using AUO for wxga + panels. There crap.. thats all there is too it.. And thanks to the poster who was sucessfully able to post pictures of this issue. I can almost garantee you it even looks worse in person. Its hard to capture the screen door or vasoline look in the pictures. But many of the AUO's have this problem on top of crappy white/greyish grainy look which these pics present wonderfully. These panels are pathetic and Dell is even more so by using them.. This shows total and complete disregard for trying to even remotely improve or have any kind of quality control processes.

Masking a crap display with gamma/contrast will never make an AUO panel into a brillant LG. It might help but will still be inferior to well made glass.

Yeah DELL should take some initiative from their side to stop delivering such crappy panels.... It seems most of these defect complaints never reach the proper authorities at DELL for them to take the right decision....

Well I had a 1420 that had a crap AUO. I ended up returning two systems and going with HP.. The HP has a wxga LG and what a difference. Just stay away from the HI res panels. Unfortunately, I believe the XGA+ is the 1440X900 so you have a nice chance of not being lucky.. Hopefully you get a good one.

I can assure you that everyone at dell.. including Michael Dell himself are very aware of the high number of returns due to displays. All manufacturing companies monitor complaints/returns. They have precise statistics showing the amounts and use graphical charts to measure improvements or neg performers from month to month. The new notebook quality index just came out and Dell just dropped huge.. a full 5 percent. They now have one of the lowest consumer satisfation ratings. They are even lower then Gateway now. This is after spending over 150 million in customer care/ support. They absolutely understand the issue with AUO but because of the cheap cost of Chinese made AUO's and the backordered systems in que.. Dell has decided its finantially worth the risk.. But I think this will cost them dear in the long run.. I am sure many, like myself have returned their Dells and gone elsewhere. I probably will never go back.. Its very hard to improve a reputation.. and very easy to lose and even harder to win back.

At this point I have seen no proof that Dell will organize itself to the point where they can specify displays by manufacturer for new or replacements systems. In my case, the customer care rep PROMISED me a sec panel on my replacement system. I ended up getting an AUO and consquently I am very happy now in front of my new HP dv6500t. :)

I would call and threaten them... just say if you guys want me to cancel/return my dell system.. then just sent me a crap AUO.. I am not kidding. Then tell them you want a LG.. I had a SEC panel and although it was not grainy.. the viewing angles were pathetic. I have a LG with my HP and love it.. I think LG may be making the best glass these days.

Yes its good that someone was sucessful in posting pics of this. Too many people on this forum think there are no issues. Just because one may get a good one.. does not mean there all good. I am sure that many at dell monitor these threads. If so, I ask Dell what are you going to do about this?

I would tend to believe that. Dell is really getting hit hard in the media.. The Wall street journal had a big article about Dells woes. The issues are spreading quick and they just dropped huge in the customer satisfaction index. To continue on as usual would be financial suicide.
