I was going to go with the WXGA+, I am in japan and was wondoring if the same issue is popping up internationally not just in the States. Also how do I figure out the make of the screen? I thought i might check my toshiba VX 570LS's screen.

    Thanks

My first 1420 with the SEC panel was not grainy at all. But I had to get a replacement since the back of the lid was cracked. The SEC was nice, but the viewing angles were atrocious. I am happy all went south with dell and I since my new HP with the LG screen is unbelievable.. This screen is nicer then my Samsung Desktop LCD and I thought that was pretty nifty.

So if I am reading this thread right, if I order a Vostro 1500 with a WXGA screen, the chances are good I will not get the grainy screen, but if I go with teh WXGA + screen it is a crap shoot if I get a good or bad one?

Thanks, still a newb when it comes to figuring out laptops and the vostro 1500 seems to fit my needs. want to make the right choice.

In case someone got AUO panel and wonders what LG/Philips wxga+ would look like, here are pics from my other thread when I got my replacement.
LG/Philips wxga+ is really sweet, brighter, much better contrast, much better color, much better viewing angle, and more importantly, much less graininess.
BTW, I got an replacement for wxga which is a AUO, and it has no graininess, but a lot darker, color is no good and backlight bleeds compared to my CPT wxga screen

Hi! What software are you using to imitate OSX' Expose? I used to use Topdesk, but I'm looking for something... cleaner looking.

I received my Vostro 1500 last week on Wednesday, I got an AUO XGA+ (1440 x 900). Got them to send me a replacement screen, it was also AUO. Getting them to send me a non-AUO screen now. Supposedly, they're going to get me an SXGA+ upgrade for no charge.

    Guys,
How do I identify the manufacturer from the ID code? I believe it's the first 3 letters, right?
But which code is for which manufacturer?

    Thanks.

just like my AUO screen on the Vostro 1400, the 1500's AUO screen looks like it has this terrible harsh blue tint over it, it makes my head hurts after i look at it more than 10 minutes

Darn, I got a AUO1447 screen on my Vostro 1400 and it's HORRIBLE! Dim brightness (even though set at max), crazy granular tint, terrible viewing angles (esp vertical) and back light bleeding takes up the bottom half of the screen!

EDIT: I'm sending it back in to get a new panel.

know this is over a month old, but I'm getting my 1500 around Tuesday and hope they don't use an AUO screen..

does anyone know if they are still using these things, and if so, do they give a replacement part or do you have to send the whole computer back?

btw, i'll post pictures and video of it when it comes in to show.

It seems that all new screens are much better than the ones delivered until September. Mine was delivered early October. Its an AUO and not grainy at all.

Received my 1400 on 11/20 with a WXGA+/SEC4457 and immediately noticed the display was not as crisp a I had expected. Pictures looked like they were colored over sand or something and overall looked washed out. The viewing angles were also very poor, verticle and also horizontal. You or the display has to be positioned in exact sweet spot for it to look decent and even then it wasn't completely uniform throughout top to bottom. I even set up my $200 portable DVD player side by side and played the same movie at the same time for comparison and my portable DVD player's picture was more detailed and it also had much better viewing angles than my Vostro. I paused both of them on one scene with a picture of a guy with freckles on his face. You could clearly see the freckles on my DVD player's display but they just only looked like blemishes on my Vostro's display. Dell is sending a replacement not only for the display issue, but also for an audio issue. I tried to confirm and secure an lg display with the replacement to reduce the chances of getting the same display issue, however they could not give me any assurance of what type of display it would have.

My Vostro 1400's WXGA+ screen is marked AUO1447 and it was disgustingly bad. The viewing angle was so small vertically that it's impossible to see the whole screen in the same color at once; i.e. if I made the whole screen a single color it would show a gradienty effect no matter what angle I looked at.

The grain is not that bad compared to some of these pictures, but the brightness is very low. Dell is sending a whole new Vostro, but like the guy above me they couldn't guarantee an LG panel.

are the 1200 x 800 screens bad? and are there the same brands of these screens? i got the wxga......

and notebookreview said that THIS one was more grainy, and by getting a better resolution, it will get rid of it, but obviously everyone here is rebutting that....

    I guess I got lucky!

My Vostro 1500 came in today 2 days earlier than expected!!

I love it. I'm typing this on it right now, and I must say the keyboard is amazing. A very good feel.

The laptop LOOKS amazing! The all black look with silver trim is great.

    It's fast as hell :)
1.8ghz core 2 duo with 2 gigs of ram (i'm going to upgrade that) gives me stellar performance.

The updating and deletion of crapware was quick and easy.

The thing that I was the most scared of was the screen. I was afraid of getting an AUO or whatever that apparently has a grainy texture and very poor viewing angles. I got an SEC screen (checked in the device manager) and it's pretty good. The viewing angles aren't amazing, butt its very clear and has a way better look than my CRT.

It could definitely be a little more crisp with better viewing angles and less darkness around the edges from a front-on view, but I'm being very picky, and overall it really is a very good screen.

This is my first laptop, although I'm a very experienced with computer...and I love it. oh yea, and wireless was a breeze.

    Can someone clarify this point:

I want to get the 1280 x 800 screen cus its cheaper and ill get better fps gaming.

    1. is the 1280 x800 better or worse quality than the higher rez screens(aside obviously from the resolution, i mean graininess, brightness etc)

    2. is the 1280 x800 best with or without truelife in terms of the quality of the screen (disregarding the obvious reflection issues with truelife)

If someone could clear this up I'd be very greatful!

I got true life with 1280x800 and it's great for gaming and good angles. But I was wondering if it would be worth the money to upgrade to 1440x900 or 1680x1050 because 1280x800 just isnt cutting it anymore for my desktop size, it's just too big. I need more room. Any suggestions? And can the vostro play CS:S at 1680x1050 with good FPS?

Hi, new here, but I thought I'd give my input about my Vostro 1500 screen.

I got it less than a month ago with the 1440x900 option and it turns out my screen was manufactured by SEC (Samsung). Image quality is pretty good in my opinion; sharp and bright screen, with decent enough colors. However, several problems with this screen:
    - Lots of Backlight bleeding from the bottom, somewhat bearable since its mostly just noticeable on a dark background.
    - Pretty terrible viewing angles. Basically only very few angles in which you can view the screen at its "best".
    - I have 1 dead pixel near top middle, and a 1 or 2 "lit" pixels here and there.

At first, I thought I could get over these flaws and decided to just keep the laptop...but fortunately, before the 30day period ran out, I realized that I couldn't tolerate these annoyances anymore so I arranged for an exchange, which should be coming very soon. I really hope I get an LG screen....this SEC one, albeit bearable, leaves a lot to be desired. I'm sick of this luck of the draw BS though, Dell should just stick to ONE manufacturer instead of trying to cut costs by letting several companies make crappy screens...I mean let's be honest...a laptop is only as good as its screen.

That AUO screen is quite disappointing! It seems a bit grainy. I guess the LG one is a lot better , although with a camera the graininess is not THAT noticeable.

i think its more about supply issues with dell. they need a lot of screens to supply their output. i bet one manufacturer cant always keep up.
