sup doodz, i am a long time lurker but first time poster...so here is my situation

i have a dell e1705 with the 7900 go gs...my screen went blank today while doing "homework" and everytime i restarted it, i would get green blocks on my screen, after using the dell diagnostics i have come to the conclusion that my video card is no more...my warranty just expired about a month ago so it looks like i will have to install a new one....i have found a 7900 gs for 100bucks and a 7800 gtx for 50...which one should i buy? and is it hard to install a new video card?

7800gtx, i believe, will produce a lot more heat than the 7900gs. performance wise, gtx might be a bit more of a performer. i'd look for something along the 79*0gtx line, if u can find one of those for cheap. dell has a guide on their web site on how to replace the card, doesn't seem to be too difficult. sorry, don't have the link

here's some good info, tho http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-Go-7900-GS.2133.0.html

I guess the Mods thought this was better in the DELL section.

That said, like ALL machinery, GPU's are liable to wear and tear. Even CPU's will one day die on you. So... I guess your GPU just decided to die on you for no reason. This also happened to my friend's desktop 6200. After he restarted the comp, it blew up (metaphorically, not literally) on him.

Hmm... speaking of which, I'm curious as to where you are finding the 7900GS and the 7800GTX for a Dell Laptop. As far as I'm aware, Dell's laptops doesn't even support MXM, so you're going to buy their own proprietary GPU format.

I'd actually like to know where you've found your sources since it may come in handy for upgrading purposes in the future... :D.

AFAIK DELL notebooks don't use standard MXM, but I believe they use somesort of an extension or a customized version of MXM. Most dedicated DELL notebook VGA cards can be upgraded or replaced with a DELL VGA card released for that specific model. For example, you can change the VGA card of an E1705 with a Go7800, 7900GS or a 7300, since all of those models were available as an option for it. But it MUST be a DELL spare part VGA card (no other notebook VGA card will work, especially not desktop cards !!!). They can be found on eBay and other similar auction sites or from DELL.

A DELL 7900GS Video card at eBay.

Are you sure that you are talking about a DELL notebook VGA card ?, because $50/$100 seems a bit low for such a card. As I said, nothing else will work !

Just because it's GO does NOT mean it will work with a DELL LAPTOP!

If you can point us to where you found that card, we can help you discern whether or not it's compatible with your Dell.

But hey, it's your money, so if you want to buy the incorrect parts and waste your money, that's your perogative .
