im leaning towards the dell D630 like this....the total comes out to $919 before tax....

the lady i spoke to offered to knock off 50$ off that price, so total with tax it comes to about 940 i think.....with tax and free shipping.....

the only thing i would do is buy another 512 memory chip so i would have 1 gig which should be enough to run xp...i dont want vista.....so the end up spending a little less than 1k....b/c i would buy the memory from another site.....it would cost me 80$ to do it with dell....30$ myself....

i wanted something 14.1, light, and good.....is dell a crappy brand? or does it get a bad rap? help please....good deal?

I'd go with the vostro 1400 also. there are better deals than that on Dell. In fact you can get a loaded 1420 for $100 more with a discrete car, 9 cell, 2GB of RAM, 160gb harddrive AND bluetooth to boot.

well my main focus is weight and speed....and i hear the d630 has less problems than the other models.....

the d630 i want is light, includes a 7200 rpm HD, and i dont need more than a 6 cell battery.....im not a gamer or anything....using it for law school......

so just to watch movies, surf the net, IM, write papers, and all that normal stuff......

if thts the case you wouldnt need to spend 900 dollars for a laptop. You can get simpler models I just thought that hte vostro 1400 can do all you want and cost alot less.

O I thought u meant u can get the 1420 for 100 more than the 1400 with included specs. SO you meant a 100 more than the d630 not hte vostro 1400

This seems like a great deal; the only thing that would make it sweeter is if XP were on it. Is there a similar offer for the 1400 but with XP instead of Vista?

Also, what are the thoughts on resolution for a 14" laptop? When I was looking at a 15" 1440x900 seemed just right, but now that I've shaved off an inch of the screen, I'm having second thoughts. I'm hoping to get to a Dell kiosk soon (none within an hour of me) but any opinions you all could offer would be welcome.

Sorry I tried looking but only found the vista option. Honestly tho vista isnt that bad at all. I use xp on my desktop but vista on my laptop and its not that hard of a transition. Microsoft is trying to phase out xp so sooner or later your going to have to go with vista. Also vista basic is basically a suped up version of XP. Turn off the security option and its alot less irritating. To use vista and save 200-300 dollars seems worth it to me. As for the screen i ddont kno because I dont have one but I really want one and thinking of selling my e1505
