Just got my m1210...love it! far surpassed what I was hoping for. the only thing I don't like is when I use the intel PROset wireless (which is actually kind of nice aside from this stupid beep) and it finds a wireless network it emits a VERY loud/scary/annoying beep. Volume/mute does not affect it and I have already chosen "no sounds" in the sound area of the control panel.

How do I turn that darn noise off? I'd like to continue to use it (as opposed to windows wireless manager).

any help is greatly appreciated. help me before I soil myself next time I find a new wireless network.

    thanks.

    anybody?

This has GOT to be an annoyance that other m1210 owners have experienced.

I never had a problem with the annoying beeping noises that the drivers made. Just the annoying pop-up notifications which I disabled very quickly within the driver settings:

    - Open the Intel PROSet/Wireless utilities (double click on the system tray icon or within the Control Panel)
    - Pick: Tools -> Application Settings from the drop down menu on the top (or hit Ctrl + P)
    - Under the Notifications settings in the Advanced Settings box, uncheck "Show Alert Notifications" and "Information Notifications"

That should get rid of the noise and pop-ups.

The scary beep is the 'system beep'.

When you selected 'no sounds' you thought you were stopping all system sounds. In fact you just made sure there are no sounds defined for any events, but windows thinks some of those events are so important that, if no sound is defined, they default to the 'system beep', as introduced on the original IBM PC.
This beep comes direct from the motherboard chipset to the soundcard amp, and doesn't go through any sort of volume control, hence the frightning volume.

I haven't found a way to stop this happening directly. I just create a very short silent 'sound', and define this as the sound for all the events in the sound manager.

That still doesn't stop it if you have linux installed in a Virtual Server machine, and the only way to stop that, on my m1210, is to go to volume control advanced settings and select 'pc spkr mute', which mutes everything.

You could also let Windows control the wireless network drivers stuff.

this is from memory so i may be wrong...

device manager > view > show hidden devices > Non-Plug and Play Drivers > Beep > disable

I just uninstalled everything but the drivers and let windows deal with wireless stuff. i find it connects almost immediately with windows but when i had the intel stuff installed it was taking up to 2mins.
