For your E1505, how long do you get stuck at the windows loading screen? Mine seems excessively long at about 25 seconds.

On my desktop, with my X2 dual core 3800+ rig, it takes about 5 seconds.

Is this normal for a laptop? and what can i do to change it. Thanks in advance guys.

Well, did you ever clear out all of the excessive bloatware that Dell puts on all of their lappies?

Usually that Dell crapware limits every system. It is really a shame, cause it is a perfectly good product tainted.

Anyway, check out the reformatting guide (sticky in the Dell forum) for help on cleaning your machine.

There's also a setting in the BIOS for POST. I think it is on the faster one by default, but, it's worth rooting through the BIOS anyhow just to see what all is in there.

Mine boots pretty quickly. I don't see the XP screen for that long.

thats odd because I've reformatted and deleted all of the bloatware. My computer is running fast as ever and beautifully so. It just takes ages to load up :(

any other suggestions? I appreciate it. Thanks

It is quite normal if you are still using Dell preinstalled OS :p

There is a tool developed by Microsoft called BootVis, which let you analyze time taken by each stage of the booting process. It is meant as a tracing tool for system developers, as I remember it also has an option like “optimize system”. Some claim that this option actually speed up booting, but most of the others including Microsoft (which no longer supports this tool) say otherwise. However I did notice improved loading times in few of the machines I tried this tool, but most of the time it had no effect. Even though MS doesn’t support it anymore a simple Google search will turn up plenty of mirrors.

thanks Phoenix I'll take a lot into that.

This isn't the orginally Dell OS. It's windows XP professional from my own CD. I went into BIOS to look at the POST behavior and the "fast boot" is set to minimal which is the fastest setting.

also it's funny because my other laptop with a celeron processor and 1 gig of ram boots faster than my new dell. Both are new, but the acer travelmate boots faster.

BTW, during the loading stage, i notice it pauses shortly about 3 times before it actually completes loading.

SORRY FOR THE THREE REPOST IN A ROW...

    Update -

I installed Bootvis, and at first I thought it went a lot quicker at 4 seconds, but the next boot up took around 15 seconds and also, I get stuck at the welcome screen for a long time as well. Whats up with that? Does anyone know how to revert to my old settings? Thank you.

OOOPS! Sorry if Bootvis made things even worse for you. It is not supposed to do that… it has never happened to me nor I have heard it making things worse.

I’m not an expert in optimizing boot times using Bootvis logs, out of curiosity, what takes longest time according to bootvis ?

You can also search for the forums for optimization or something similar, which pretty much summarizes what to do to speed up your computer. I don't remember it mentioning one of my favorite cleaners I've come across. It's called Crap Cleaner or CCleaner, it cleans up your hard drive a little and scrubs your registry for things that aren't needed. First time I ran it it cleaned 600Mb off my hard drive.

Here's the link to the "optimize a notebook" thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=5787&highlight=optimization

I've had that happen to me many, many times. Usually, it is because I have a mapped network drive that is not accessible (for any number of reasons). If you delete the drive mapping, boot times are normal.

Also, sometimes, it just takes forever to DHCP an IP address, and that can cause delays. Those delays, though, are usually after your desktop is up, and the system tray icons are loading.
