hey. when i wake my 1520 from sleep (vista), it seems like the hard drive runs as much as it does from a cold boot. why would this be?

i have hybrid sleep disabled, so it shouldn't be storing info on the hard drive to wake up. i also have indexing turned off...

how long does your hard drive run when you wake up your dell?

also, which is better for overall drive longevity- having 5-6 sleep/wake cycles per day, or just keeping it up all day and putting it to sleep at night?

    word!

It shouldn't. But from a cold boot its the infamous superfetch loading up the world that keeps the HD running. Does it happen every time? Maybe you just woke it up and the AV started up.. updating or windows updating etc.. there are an endless amount of services or possible apps that you may have installed that could be doing this. But generally speaking, your hard drive should not be as busy from sleep as a cold boot. Everything should already be stored in memory.

yes, i agree. that is what i thought- shouldn't run that long.

but, man, it runs for like a minute or longer. it might run even LONGER than it does from a cold boot. i use avast and zone alarm... i wonder if one of these is the cause?

i have readyboost enabled. i wonder if that is it? any ideas?

edit- good lord, it's the ready boost. man. it runs the HD forever when i turn it on, and makes the HD run forever when it wakes from sleep. i wonder why vista has been set to rewrite the readyboost cache from sleep, since the damn SD drive should be the same? i guess i could have taken it out and put another in there. hehe.

now the real question- is there a way to disable vista from rewriting the readyboost cache when it wakes from sleep?
and the answer is- NO! this is a bug for vista. it rewrites the readyboost cache when you wake from sleep. they may fix this in sp1 with some sort of detection to confirm the readyboost drive hasn't been altered (taken out).

ah, vista- why are you so young, so naive...

    no more readyboost for me!
