my xps runs pretty fast but its start-up speed is amazingly SLOW. It usually took more than 3 minutes just to see the welcome screen.

I found a thread about tweaks and tricks to boost the computer performance but I doesn't really help much. Is there any way I can cut the boot time in half?

Thank you all for answering my question.

Have you reformatted since you've received your computer?

It sounds to me like you have a large amount of bloatware that is slowing down your machine, specifically at startup processes. The typically fix for this is to perform a full reformat of your computer, followed up by going through your windows startup processes carefully and disabling unneeded ones.

Also, the boot files defrag that is discussed in the NBR Tweaks thread helps in the boot time area.

yeah. Actually I killed every single thing in my disks and reinstalled vista. I also don't have many start up programs. But I'll try to eliminate some more startup programs and see if it helps. Thank you.

i know you're working on your startup programs, but it always helps to have a startup program monitor like the freeware "WinPatrol". It's a handy little program and you can edit the startup's, delay the startup of individual programs, etc. Just do a google search for it.......

Wait, you reinstalled vista and it still takes 3 minutes to boot up?...Is it just me or is something definitely wrong here? I don't think window's services and such would take that long to load...especially on a XPS! Even if it has a 5400rpm drive... How long did it take to start up after a clean vista install (before you install ANYTHING else)?

When I reinstalled Vista, it took only 1 minutes 12 seconds to boot on the first reboot.

What virus protection are you running? Norton and McAfee could be adding the extra time. Try ESET Nod32. It's screamin' fast (and cut 2 minutes off the boot time on my old system running XP.)

sounds like something isn't loading the correct driver, or perhaps you dont have any of your chipset drivers installed.

Yes, definitely use ESET NOD32. It's super-light-weight but it's the most powerful and effective AV program I have ever used. However, I still don't think it would take that much longer even to have Norton AND McAfee installed....

<strike>Nizzy1115</strike> vananhdo how long does it take to start up after a clean install?

3 minutes to load! That is a long time! Tweak msconfig startup and disable programs you don't need or hardly use such as updaters, and choose 2 cores on boot, advanced option.
