it depends if you want a new one, or not.

the absolute cheapest way is the Dell Outlet which sells 2nd hand refurbished/returned laptops. Usually there's nothing at all wrong with them, and they're "as new" but it will say if it's scratched or something.

if you're looking to buy a brand new one directly from Dell sales, you have three options.

    1) configure it yourself on the web

this can be tricky. Dell typically offers about four different starting configurations that you can then add to if you want. The stupid thing is sometimes the more expensive starting configurations are cheaper than taking a cheaper one upto the same specification. see?

so the general practice is to decide on the specification you want, open up all four options in different browser windows, set them to the spec, and see which is cheapest.

    2) online chat with a Dell representative

this can be accessed by clicking Chat With Us on the Dell site.

this basically requires you doing the same footwork as above, but once you know which is the cheapest configuration, you can get the system's "e-value code".

if you tell this to whoever you're chatting to, they can usually give you a better price for the same configuration. as far as I know, they still use the website, but have the option to set the price - meaning you can negotiate it down a bit.

    3) the best way - call Dell.

the absolute best thing you can do is call Dell. you can tell them exactly what you want, and they'll configure it as such. you can often get the best deal because they have access to components that are missed out from the website's starter configurations...

It depends where you live. You might be able to coupons, maybe not. It also may be your only choice to buy in your country unless you have a relative living some place else.

Yes, Outlet computers are not "second hand". They are not used computers. Alot of the outlet computers are from people which have ordered, and then cancelled or even just declined shipment. But Dell is unable to sell these as "new" anymore. Unless you buy a scratch and dent, it will come to you as if you bought it from the regular Dell site.

So to answer your question. The cheapest price you will get is buying from the Outlet. Getting a 15% off coupon code for the outlet. And also calling up Dell to place the order and talk to someone on the business side and ask for free shipping.

Yes but only a FEW is new, most are from people who opened the box, doesn't like it, and sent it back, or just somebody send the entire laptop back after some parts of it doesnt work and get a replacement, so Dell fixes the one they got back up and put it back up for sale

I would suggest to use a 25% off coupon but if the coupon doesn't work in your area then i would suggest to buy it off of Dell Oulet because it would be almost half the price...

i think maybe epp is cheaper than 25% off coupon, cause 25% off coupon will instead of instant savings,if i use epp 10% off,i will get 10% off epp+instant savings,so i will save cost,is it right?

my friend is living in Atalanta,is it free-tax area?

I didnt really used a EPP COUPON CODE..

I called Dell about my order and i had to make some modifications, so they transfered me back and forth and finally to the Member Purchase Program Sales, and the Guy there told me he can give me an additional $55 off, which is about 5%, so i said "okay that would be great!" And he went ahead and took $55 off plus gave me free next business day air shipping..

My tax is very low thats why it is very cheap.. My tax was like $50..

For those of you live in states with higher tax, Thats too bad.. :p

    WRONG.

Outlet computers labeled as Scratch and Dent AND Certified Refurbished are most definitely "second hand". Only Previously Ordered New are supposedly returns that were never opened or turned on.

I have ordered hundreds of Outlet PC's and I can tell you, without a doubt, that even Certified Refurbished units have scratches and signs of use. Some even come complete with the previous owners "grunge" and fingerprints all over the PC and LCD (if a notebook). While I pamper and keep my PC's and notebooks spotless, it's obvious that others in the world do not rate that as a high priority (or a priority at all!).

While, generally, you'll get a perfectly functioning system from the Outlet, it is not guaranteed. There have been times that I have certainly purchased some else's problems. But, you have 21 days to return it, or get it fixed under warranty. It's a trade-off for saving some substantial money.

My opinion is different. I have NEVER purchased a Outlet computer that has any signs of use. But I have never ordered a a Scratch and Dent. And if you have purchased "hundreds" of these computers, I don't care if you buy new or "outlet", there will be a percent of those hundreds that will have issues. I have not purchased hundreds. But I did purchase 40 desktops and 8 laptops for a event that my company did. I.E. We rented these units out for a month. You know how many looked like they were used? Or had any signs of wear? One. And that is because it was damaged in shipping. The only sign that they are refurbs is the sticker saying so.

My latest outlet purchase (the M1530 that I am typing on right now). Had factory plastic "wrap" (not sure what else to call it) over all the parts that it would if you bought non-outlet. So all those parts are new. Brand-new.

Anyways, back on the OP. My advice would be to start hunting at the various deal sites. Slickdeals.net and Fatwallet.com . Start looking for outlet coupons twitter.com/delloutlet . Or if you do not want to buy a outlet computer. Just keep your eye out. There was a deal a month ago or so for a awesome setup non-outlet for I think it was $999

    Tusin,

You've obviously missed the point of my post. I'm extremely happy that your purchase from the outlet looked new. Dell does a great job refurbishing some of the models (like Optiplex desktops, which are pretty rugged anyways), and a not-so-great job on others (like the XPS 420's with the glossy black top and front that is so easily scratched that almost all of them from the outlet come scratched up). Laptops are definitely abused more than desktops, and therefore will show more signs of (ab)use than a desktop.

The point of my post was to say that S & D and Cert. Refurbished ARE second hand. They have ALL had a previous owner. Even by Dell's own definition, only the Previously Ordered New systems stand a chance of not having ever been out of the box and turned on.

Were your computers "Certified Refurbished" or "Previously Ordered New"?

Just because something looks new doesn't make it so.

Go with the Dell Outlet, I got this:

    XPS M1530 Black
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz
    Vista Home Premium
    2 GB RAM
    256MB Nvidia 8600M GT
    120GB 7200RPM HDD
    1280 x 800 + Webcam
    Intel 4965 A/G/N + Bluetooth

Plus all the usual junk like (really nice) headphones, remote, etc.

    $999.99 + 15% Coupon = $849.99 + Tax & Shipping = $927

Honestly, I was worried about buying an Outlet computer, but if it didn't have the following on the bottom, I wouldn't have known it wasn't new.

Its wherever you are going to get the best deal, and what you feel comfy with ;)

I bought new, cuz I used my EPP discount and felt I was getting a great deal on my 1530 at that time. A friend of mine get his notebooks from the Dell Outlet and has alway had good luck ;) :)

    Just my opinion ;) :D

You can sign up for coupons at Dell Outlet's site, or keep looking on this forum under the Dell Coupons section or techbargains.com.

There have not been any coupons from Dell Outlet for a while...I keep waiting!
