Hi, I have a inspiron 1520 with 2.2 ghz, 2gb ram, and the 8600gt video card with XP home. How well should I be running COD 4? I think I've read that some people run at mostly high settings with this kind of computer but when I tried it wasn't running very smoothly. Also when I click set optimal settings like in the game options, they have almost all things turned off and with 800x600 resolution.. I was just wondering should I be able to get higher settings and still run smoothly? I haven't downloaded any drivers or overclocked or anything, I just installed the game on my computer. Thanks.

You should be able to run that on High pretty easily.

I have the exact same specs but 2.0ghz, and all settings are high with most effects on. I experienced little/no slow down in gameplay.

Yep, you should have to trouble running it at mostly high settings and at least WXGA/WXGA+ res.

You can't just say "All settings on high"

What resolution are you running at with "all settings on high"?

I can run it at native res, 1280by800, maxed out with 'soften smoke edges' turned off.

    I get 30-120 fps..

    Upgrade you're drivers I suggest.

    I'm using 169.09

I tend to use fraps to check my FPS in a game as well, its really useful.

I have everything turned up to max, even the resolution is on 1900x1200, but have AA turned off - that seems to slow things down for me. Otherwise I get 30-60FPS.

Your system should be fine though - mostly medium-high settings and at 1280x800. As someone said, update your drivers if possible. You shouldnt need to overclock at all. Use fraps and play with the settings to get whats right for you. COD4 isnt as demanding as games such as Bioshock, Crysis, and Gears of War IMO.

I have the 8600 and the 1.5cpu. I can get around 45fps on single payer with the 169.13 (I think) with a slight overclock of the graphics card. I'm almost on high everything, but I definitely AM running AA at 4x

I want to get a faster cpu and see if that changes anything.

Checkout my COD4 settings on the Dell forum, message 27. There is also a MP screen. This game is the best performing so far on my M1730.

I am using nhancer as a program to manage the Sli profile for that game. I think I am getting a little better performance with it also because they us a new variety of the AFR mode and I believe the NV control panel is buggy.

Not really much point in giving 1730 performance with SLI 8700's to answer the question concerning a 1520 with single 8600m GT.

But then I'd love the bragging rights ..... ;)

I have not changed anything in the NVidia control panel.

See this for updating your video card driver.

If you had 64-bit, you'd know.

Besides those 8700s get slammed in all the other threads it's nice be on top for a minute.

I would just run it at medium, but thats just because I cant stand low frame rates < 80-100. Most people will do fine with around 60 fps once you start going lower then 50 it starts to become annoying and around 30 fps it starts becoming unplayable.

Are you serious? 30fps is usually considered definitely playable and 20 or lower is where fast-paced games usually start to become unplayable. Each to his own, however, but for most people, anything 30 or above is totally fine.

If you're curious then ask, don't make statements like "That game sucks" because statistics say otherwise.

Anyways, the answer to your question is probably because he thinks the game is fun.

    This is getting OT.

    1 - apparently I had another screen name I didn't know about

    2 - Yes. This is 1280x800. At 520/470 I get that. I'm running a DX10 redistributable, BIOS update and the 169.13 drivers from laptopvideo2go.

Your right, but you will notice a difference in smoothness if you run 100fps 100hz, everything is smooth as water. Im just saying that you will play better if you have more frames.

If your running 60 frames at 60hz constant vs a player running 100fps and 100hz you miss 40 frames. Player running at 100 frames sees 40 more frames then one running 60fps... but since this is on a notebook your best off capping it at 60 fps or whatever your highest hz is.

So you can get all your graphics turned up and play at low frames or play with high framerate and outfrag the other person.
