Im getting a dell 9400 for christmas with the wxga+ screen. I didnt get the better one because i needed to keep the price down for other things like the7900gs. I here that the screen i got is bad and theres problems and that it has a bad viewing area and that it is dull. Can someone with this screen or has seen it tell me how it is. Also will it be comparible size to a 17 inch desktop with 1280x1024 resulotion?

I have the WXGA on my E1705 and honestly love it. I have 0 stuck or dead pixels. With my 7900 GS displaying at 1440x900 I get awesome FPS on current games. This question has been discussed many times on this forum so I know there is much more info for you here through search. Now I also have a little light leakage and the field of view is a somewhat narrow but I still have nothing but love for this machine. My opinion "if you can easily afford it go with UXGA" if not the XGA screen will do an excellent job for you. Congrats on picking up a fine machine soon. Sorry, never had a 1280x1024 LCD for compare.

Ok thanks alot, that felt good to hear. I always thought matte screens have a better view since they dont have glare or shinyness.

I got the WXGA matte screen too. Yup, the viewing angles are really tight, not very forgiving when you move your head an inch in any direction.
You might want to try talking to a sales rep during order, and ask for the lcd screen brand to be LG Phillips. If you get the Samsung LCD, there's a chance of really bad leakage... been seeing lots of ppl with that particular brand complaining.

Is the viewing angle tighter than your SJ96 ? What is the response time of the matte screens?

Yes, the viewing angles are tighter than the S96J. Response times are 25ms... I got this info out of LG Phillip's website.

No, it's good! I love how Oblivion looks on this thing. Just that with the viewing angles the way it is, a friend wanting to see what you are playing will probably be seeing dark corners most of the time, that's all.

Dont fret Saleen you are going to like your new laptop. Just like most LCD screens there is a sweet spot on the E1705.

is that the one with the glossy screen? if it is, dont get it. try to get the max resolution on matte screen. i currently have the glossy screen and its absolutely horrible. unless youre always in the dark, the 10% higher contrast or whatever isn't worth the upgrade--even if its free. to be frank, you cant see anything at all.

I would check some retailers and see a few 17" models in person. If your worried about the size on a 17". WXGA+ is pretty standard and you'll see it on most of the 17" notebooks on display. You could also try a Dell Kiosk. Maybe you'll get a lucky and get to see Dell's WXGA+ 17" inch screen in person. Don't get your hopes to up on that one though as I see higher resolutions their most of the time.
