This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved.     huge external modem

    Most people probably don't need 56K modems any more, so it makes sense for Dell to eliminate internal modems from newer laptops.

    But I still need one for when I travel to certain locations. So I added an external (USB) modem to my M1330 configuration.

    Since the laptop is supposed to be small and light, I figured I'd get a small and light modem. What I got was a huge mother that was about half as large as the laptop itself (top left of picture, US Robotics 5633B).

    Which is too bad, since small modems do exist (e.g. the Zoom "inline" modem shown at bottom right in the attached picture). It just means I'll have to shell out another $50 for one.
