and wow...it's an absolute peice of sh*t...

i have never been so disappointed before in my life in a product. i got the 1440X900 screen and i cant bare to look at it. its like you have to look at the perfect angle for the color to be even - absolutely horrendous. the image quality is also atrocious.

the laptop itself is a cheap peice of plastic. i thought everyone liked the keyboards. theyre awful. can i return this free of charge?

me too! I had 1420 (1440x900) for a 10 days and I absolutely loved the screen: crisp and no problem reading or working in 1440x900 resolution. I returned it because its heavy (or not as light as I expected) and I thought, for heavy, I might as well get 1520 with 1680x1050. So, I ordered 1520 now.

you were denounced as a troll right away due to your opening statement

you obviously dont know anything about the construction or components of this particular laptop since it is far from being a piece of sh*t. it is 1 of the sturdiest laptops on the market now compared to all brand names. as for the screen, guess what? sh*t happens. there have been numerous problems with the screens on 1520s and some on the 1420s. you just got unlucky.

i don't even know what a troll is but I'm gonna agree with them because 1st, you didn't give us any of your specs other than the screen. 2nd, you call it a cheap piece of plastic, which most people say it seems extremely strong other than the loose battery (loose battery might be vostro I have been reading the forums about both recently and can get them confused). Finally you call the keyboard awful but give no reasons why, like sticky keys or odd placement of certain keys

if you think im a troll, just look at my post history. ive made numerous posts in anticipation to receiving this laptop.

so i didnt know that it was made of magnesium...big whoop. it feels like plastic to me. compared to my old HP, i hate the build quality.

i dont know the proper term, but the bottom of the screen is much worse in quality than the top, in terms of the color. i cant stand it. the image quality is also horrendous. when looking at pictures, its like this jagged image.

suit yourself if u think im a troll. im not here to impress anyone. i just want to know if i have to pay shipping for a return?

Not if you can convince the customer service that there is a defect with the laptop.

i dont think there is a "defect." i think its just the build quality of the screen. its not defected - its just not good. i dont know how to explain it - im not computer literate (i would hate to be labeled a "troll" again for my ignorance), but it looks like the bottom of the screen has different color strength than the top. i cant explain it. its like the bottom is drained out...

look, fine I dont even care anymore Ill make my own opinion when I get mine soon :). BTW what was your specs on your order?

you should be able to return your computer within 21 days (or something like that) of you receiving it at your house. Aparently there is no restocking fee aswell so totally free. I believe you can either put it back in the box and ship it back or bring it to a dell kiosk.

the specs were great. i totally souped it, thats why im so disappointed. 1440X900 glossy. the lowest processor i think. dvd burner. bluetooth. webcam. 160 gig, 2 gig RAM. boy i was excited.

i guess im just comparing it to my HP which i found absolutely beautiful. i hope i didnt ruin any prospective buyer's mood with that post - maybe im just picky, but i cant stand the screen. i guess its "leakage."? its like i hafta look at it from the bottom for the entire screen to have the same color values...weird.

theres no dell kiosk in this city i live in (warner robins, georgia). if i ship it back, do they make me pay or what exactly happens?

the problem is you got glossy. thats all, glossys suck, you should have gotten anti glare thats all.

no the problem isnt glossy...its how the resolution is displayed. There is some problem with the higher resolutions, and 1440x900 is affected most. There have been many ppl with glossy 1200x800 screens with no problem, and matte/anti glare 1440x900 screens with problems. Glossy is affectively a layer on the screen, which could not produce the "grainy" effect.

i dont think its grainy like some have complained. its just this weird contrast from the top and bottom of the screen that is driving me nuts.

I had the glossy as well. And I absolutely loved it.

I am convinced that, if OP is not a troll, his screen is damaged, and he should return it.

I have the 1420 as well, and while the viewing angles are particular, they're nothing worse than what I expected.

desisolja, you can't cloak a legitimate criticism in rhetorical exagerration ('absolutely horrendous", "cheap piece of plastic") and expect people to take you seriously.

No...just talk to a "live" online rep and tell them your story CALMLY !!! Tell them that your new 1420 has a "defective" screen then tell them the details BUT make sure that you do use that word-"defective". I know it's semantics but otherwise, they might not email you the Free Return Label (usu. UPS)....

typically, if its defective and you insist on returning for full refund, they will create an RMA and send UPS guy for the pickup, at no cost to you (within 21 days).

With my 1520, I explained about the underclocked video card, the poor quality screen, and the headphone jack interference. The rep didn't argue with me at all and simply said UPS would pick it up (they won't give you new packing material though, so keep the box--I was an idiot and threw mine away because I was so excited about the laptop itself and I had to use my boyfriend's box from last year to return the 1520 :)). It was amusingly hassle-free compared to the order process. I just shipped it today so I'm waiting to see how long it takes to get it taken off of my DPA or if they do something tricky with the refund.
