I would really like a notebook with 14.1 inch size screen, i think it's the best for both size and portability, I intend my future notebook to be media oriented and not bussines oriented. So i would like to run Vista Home premium and its aereo feature, wich demands a dedicated graphics card (tell me if i'm wrong) Dell's two 14.1 screen notebooks are the e1405 and dell D620, of these two the only one with a dedicated graphics card is the D620. the bad thing is from what i have heard the audio in this notebook is very bad, it doesn't offer an upgrade to Vista Home premium just bussiness, and it's just too "serious job" looking, is it as bad as i think? can it be usefull for media things? i'm lost.
I think i have to settle with XPS m1210, but i'm affraid of the sceen size. :(

Why Dell? How about an HP dv200t? You can get it with a 128mb nvidia 7200.

i have considered the hp and also Asus, but i have a friend that gets company discounts from dell, also here in Costa Rica Dell is the company that has more service, technicians, etc. The mayority of persons here use Dell or apple. Also i can't use coupons in Dell web page for Costa Rica, so the company discount is much apreciated. Sigh... I wanted an ASUS.

The D620 is not that bad in the sound department but there aren't many notebooks with good speakers anyways. You shouldnt rely on the notebook speakers but instead use headphones or external speakers.

I prefer the looks on the D620 compared to my i9300 but that is me.

There are much better notebooks than the 14 inch Dell. Head over to the notebook buying section and fill out the FAQ. Or just post a budget here. The best 14" notebooks are Compal HGL-30, Asus A8Js, Asus W3J, Thinkpad x60.
These go for 1499-1799. Look to spend this much for a 14" with a decent GPU.

there is a video proof posted long time ago that e1405 handles pretty good aero of vista and GMA950 is not that bad as video card. i also have e1405 and checked it with windows vista upgrade advisor and it says:
"Your current video card will support the Windows Aero™ user experience" No action required.
if you consider gaming than you need a dedicated graphic card and go with dell and xps1210, and i think SSJ3Goku isnt right because what is best notebook? also 1499-1799 is too expensive for 14"

    here's VISTA on GMA 950

Sorry to say, but you're pretty much stuck with the few limited choices. The Dell Latitude D620, ASUS W3J, ASUS A8Js, and HP Compaq nc6400 are all great laptops that'll suit your needs quite nicely. If Dell's all you'd consider, just get the D620. It might not be the best in the bunch in regards to screen quality, but it should'nt be half bad. It's build quality is second only to Lenovo/IBM, or so I heard.

Good things about the Latitude D620; dedicated graphics, lightweight, built well, two forms of integrated cursor movement (touchpad/trackstick) & very little pre-installed gubbins - only MCafee.

Bad things about the Latitude D620; small mouse buttons if you get the fingerprint reader, screen is not the best around & battery life with the Quadro NVS (which also heats up quite a bit) and 6-Cell is only 2:30 - 3hrs.

The sound is ok, despite the mono speaker and the screen, whilst not brilliant, isn't too bad.

It's a bit of a shame you can't get Home Premium upgrade for the D620, only Business, but hey, I'm buying Home Premium for my desktops anyway so it'll give me some variety.

WXGA looks pretty decent on a 12" screen to me. If you can get a look at one before you buy you should. The m1210 offer better quality than the e1405 in my opinion.

I bought my gf a e1405 and i think its the perfect size. It gets great battery life as well. Aero will run on integrated graphics of the 1405 because a member on these forums installed vista ultimate on it and reports that it works fine. If your not into gaming then 1405 is the best deal for the dollar. sure you can get better ones but at higher prices but the 1405 is the the best bang for the buck. I would consider the 1405 if your looking for a cheap laptop. If you want to spend more the m1210 is good as well but 12 inches might be to small of a screen and it is hard to type on (i had a inspiron 700m which also had a 12 inch screen)

The things that put me off the 640m or "e1405" as you call it were that it wasn't that light at 2.5kg and the awful white bumpers, why couldn't they be black?
