Not sure if this is a Windows Vista issue, or an i1520 issue.. but it's rather odd. Up until recently, if I press fn-f1, the computer goes into hibernation.

A week or so ago, I realized that this wasn't happening anymore - I use the keyboard shortcut, and nothing happens at all. The machine will still hibernate if I go through the start menu (but that's not as convenient..)

Any ideas? I didn't change any settings that would have an impact on this, AFAIK..

Doesnt Fn + F1 make the laptop to go into SLEEP mode ? Or you are calling that as Hibernate ?

And for that key combination to work I suppose you need to have QuickSet installed ? Have you got it installed on your laptop ?
