Hi I have an Inspiron 6000 w/P-M 1.6 730 processor w/512 mb ram, 40 gb HD, 8x DVD Burner, 128 mb x300 video card. Just out of curiosity, why does my screen flicker about two times before the image appears steadily on the screen when I open my laptop lid after closing it? Is it a performance thing?

wow, you have the same exact system, so i assume it should be identical. Stranegely i have no image after closing my book, and reopening it. Its still fresh from the factory, just got it today, so i havent gone out nd updated everything. Although a small flicker, that dosent seem to be a problem, as long as it dosent flicker anyother time.
-
It does not cause a severe problem..I just get annoyed by the fact that it's a centrino..it should be able to open and close w/o a problem.
-
Have you updated your video drivers?
-
I have..but the flicker thing is really annoying to me now..cuz it delays DVD and music programs...IE: song is playing, the opening of the lid causes a pause in the song..and flickering of the display...doesn't happen on my HP ZV6000..w/athlon 3200....damn. I better be able to fix this or I'm gonna be one unhappy camper.

This is happening on most laptops (not just Dell). It is an operating system issue, not the hardware. Be happy you got that thing for cheap, I am getting one too, it is a good laptop for my kid.
-
Is his HP just lucky then?

My 6000 screen regularly flicks 2x but at different times. I'm not sure it ever happened after just opening it. Mostly as I am using it does it about 1/hour. Doesn't bother me too much and doesn't affect applications.
-
Mine only happens during the opening up of the laptop lid. I contacted Dell Customer Service and they're "concerned"...I did what they told me to do so far...making sure the laptop does not go back and forth between aC power/battery--it does not. Also, make sure the bios setting are correct for the brightness levels...and make sure my AC adapter is not faulty...and i've done all of that..they all pass. I emailed them back saying that, and hopefully, they can fix this problem or something.
I have a HP ZV6000 that I bought a while ago. This Dell is supposed to replace the HP. I don't know now...since this flicker is happening. This flicker happened on my HPZV5000Z...but not on the new HPZV6000. I don't know what to do..but I can't tolerate this flicker.
Can someone explain why it's an OS thing and not a Hardware thing? -
go figure, i have the same notebook as u. the flicker thing does happen to me, but it doesnt bother me because it doesnt stop the music that im playing or slow down any of the programs that are running. i think its just the screen trying to turn on again.
-
Make your screen to not go "Blank" when you close the lid, that will fiks your problema.
-
How? All I have done is set the notebook power options to go to DO NOTHING when I close the lid.
Hopefully, my Dell service rep understands waht kind of flicker I'm experiencing, and not...like random flicker some experience. -
I have my new 6000 for few weeks now.
When I turn it off, I usually dont closed it. I move it as closed to the keyboard. Why mess with the hinges? Unless of course you want to carry it, yah then totally closed it. -
Does it have "Turn off the monitor" after an "XX" minutes ON? Or this is happening even if you close and open it at once?
-
Dell told me to flash the bios, install new video card drivers, and all taht good stuff...I did. It did not resolve the problem.
I am going to arrange to have a technician come to my house and reinstall a new video card.
My problem is as follows (taken from another forum):
"I get the sound mess-up upon close and it looks like the screen waits 2 or 3 seconds before turning off which comes with another sound mess-up. When I open the sound messes up again, and then the screen comes back on after 3 or 4 seconds. Unfortunately, we've all described the same problem (more or less), but lots of different hardware. I've got nVidia G-Force2Go display adapter on this beast. Anyone been able to work around this for this config? "
Changes to the above message---I have an I6000 w/ ATI Radeon X300 128mb.
I hope dell's replacement of my video card will fix it!!! *fingers crosssed* -
101% you'r obsesset about it too much. I've said and repeat, it is not a hardware. But then again, you don't care, so me no explaining no more.
-
Well, Dell decided it was an LCD failure (I don't agree)..I told them to do that and the Video card replacement...I am just HOPING our of SHEER LUCK that it will work, although it probably won't, since you're all screaming at me taht it's an OS thing. They decided to send a technician to my home to replace the MOBO, Video card, and LCD if necessary.
My only concern is..it shouldn't be happening in the first place, especially if an Athlon 64 3200+ from HP can handle the LCD flicker thing. Dell should improve their design, and fix my problem, or it's going straight back to them.
I know I am being obsessed....but it's annoying, it disrupts my music and DVD playback.
I hope you all know that when I say flicker, I mean...image cutting in and out after opening the LCD lid; not refresh rate kind of flicker.
