Hi,
I want to get an Inpsiron 6000 with the ATI Mobility X300 128Mb. On the swiss Dell website, there is not such distinction with the "d" meaning dedicated graphic card. All i6000 are called Inspiron 6000 no matter if they have an integrated video or the X300 however the X300 is available as update.
The problem is that after having configured my notebook with the ATI Mobility X300 128Mb, the website still lists that my system will use the Intel 915GM chipset.................and I thought that the X300 PCI Express card would use the 915PM chipset!!!!
Is this an error from Dell or is it possible to run an X300 128Mb on the 915GM chipset??????? Do all X300 128Mb have dedicated memory or is it possible that some market get versions with shared memory thus explaining why Dell list it with the GM chipset?????? (There is no mention of dedicated or shared memory with the X300 card on Dell's swiss website...)
I'm hoping to upgrade the GPU in the future if this is possible and I know this may be done only with the 915PM chipset and NOT with the 915GM chipset....
Many thanks

As I understand it, the x300 has 32mb of its own dedicated memory and uses up to 96 shared. Therefore, while I could be wrong, I believe it would ship with the PM chipset and Dell just made an error.

Are there different kinds of X300???? I too believe it's a PCI express card with 128Mb of dedicated memory and thus should use the PM chipset but a lot of people seems to have heard it's also a card that shares the memory with the system -> GM chipset.
Strange.
EDIT:
I've just looked at ATI website and it seems the X300 has DIFFERENT designs:
"Multiple Variants For Ultimate Design Flexibility
Support for multiple mobile form factors:
- Discrete
- On-chip 32MB DDR (64-bit)
- On-chip 64MB DDR (64-bit)"
Please look at http://www.ati.com/products/mobilityradeonx300/specs.html
This is not clear for me but as far as I understand, the X300 can have full dedicated memory (dicrete?) BUT it can also have only 32Mb or 64Mb of dedicated memory and shares the rest with the system RAM!!!!!!!!!!
Can anybody confirm this please???
i6000: Will I get 915GM or 915PM chipset?
