Is there a way to get clear stereo out from the headphone jack?

I get fine audio in my headphones when they're switched to mono, but stereo is distorted. I've tried other headphones.

(If I listen to an mp3--recorded in stereo--in mono, the audio in the left channel is loud, but the right channel is barely audible.)

If I try to listen with stereo headphones, I get clear audio out of the left, but a warbling sound out of the right. It's awful.

    should be clear

    1. check your speaker settings in the sound applet from control panel

    or

    2. return it cuz your audio card is defective

I've played with the settings under the Control Panel. What precisely should it be set to?

    Dell told me this:

For this you will have to purchase the device listed in the link
    mentioned below:

I just want to listen to stereo mp3s, and games in stereo, with a set of simple stereo headphones without distortion.

actually, i misread your original post...

you may want to check the levels in your volume applet. sometimes the wav level is really high while the main volume control is low, therefore when you increase the main, it can distort...

remember there are three volume levels you have to balance out... the wav, main, and volume on whatever media player you are using...

have you tried adjusting these 3 settings in unison?

    >> Do the headphones sound OK on other devices?

Work great with my MP3 player.

    >> Do other headphones do the same thing when plugged into it?

    Yes.

    >> Are all of your settings set to normal listening levels, not on "MAX"?

They're not on max. This pair of headphones has a mono/stereo switch and there is a definite lack of clarity on stereo.

    >> Is the sound OK that's coming out of the laptop speakers?

    Yes. The speakers are fine.

    >> I don't think its the sound card necessarily, it may be your headphones, but it could also be a loose connection on the jack, which essentially means replacing the card, doesn't it? Aren't they integrated?

I don't notice any increased distortion when rotating the headphone plug in the jack. Maybe there's something wrong with the audio drivers???

No, it's not the driver. Just reinstalled it.

More: When I have my headphones switched to mono, I can use the in-line volume control and it sounds fine. But when I switch to stereo, I can hear a hiss, then a loud distortion (like a rustling) when using the in-line volume control.

Is there anyone with an Inspiron 6000 that can hear stereo with headphones? It is POSSIBLE, right?

it's possible to get stereo sound from your 6000, i use 3 different sets of headphones all the time.

sounds like your audio card is jacked up, contact dell and get that sucker fixed

Anyone know the typical turn-around time for repairs like this?

I can't afford to be without my computer this week or next, and then I was hoping to take it with me on vacation at the end of May.

I was hoping this wasn't a hardware problem, but I guess it is. Unfortuante. Other than this, I've had a pretty decent experience with my Inspiron 6000.

Thanks for all your help, guys.

Hey, any way to force mono out? Then I could at least use my headset until I get my notebook fixed.

I tried that. Doesn't work. Doesn't affect the sound that is routed through the audio out jack. It still comes out stereo, which is distorted in my stereo headset.

    dunno then,

maybe just use the balance slider in volume control. then you can only use one headphone and pretend to be a dj

I hoped that would work, but the right channel slider has no effect. The left channel is the only one with audio and it's distorted, loud, or soft.

Well, I guess I'll just have to do my gaming without my headset for awhile.

go to your volume control. Then go to options/properties settings. Toggle to display all of your options. If you have a lineine / mic /input option mute it.

You could be getting feedback from the microphone jack if there is no microphone attached to your computer.

Tried that. It's not feedback from the microphone.

And if it was, it would be still be a problem because I wouldn't be able to use a headset for gaming.
