Though its too early to call it a trouble, but here it goes.

Got my brand new i6000d yesterday. I had taken 8x DVD read/write drive. Now when I enter any disk (CD/DVD alike)into the drive, it makes a distinct sound as if someone is pressing hard against a shiny steel plate and rubbing it. It comes in the first few minutes only.

Also when i eject, the tray comes out with a distinct sound of spring being released.

These sounds give me an uneasy feeling abt the quality and life of my disc drive. Never heard any such sounds while working with optical media before.
Anyone else facing similar problem ??? Any remedies ? I hope its not due to any damage while shipping

    Many thanks

Yikes! Call up for service (so they can send another drive) or send it back and get an HP or something.

The spring thing sounds normal, nothing should be touching the disc while it is in the drive, top or bottom.

I had a NEC ND-5500A which is the 4x version. The spring is used to push out the tray a little bit so you can pull it out. Mine was similar. If you think something is touching in there, I would contact Dell. Right now I have a Panasonic drive which is slot loading so there is no spring in there. Good Luck.

yah it's really hard to tell without knowing what the sound sounds like

I mean personally so far my drive in my computer sounds alright except when it's trying to verify a disk for sacred game. That's the only game it totally sounds jacked up. The rest is barely any sound except at spinup/spindown

It's of course ridicously vibrates the heck out of the palm rests.

I would say definately check it out and see if maybe hte tray isn't level. If it was something serious as the disk rubbing on the top or bottom of drive I would suspect you'd see scratches by now on the disks or the drive would get stuck.

It might just exteremely loud and nothign to worry about.

Error on safe side and get a replacment drive from dell via your warranty if it is covered. if not you could try to buy a drive from bestbuy or something and install it yourself to see if you get the same sound. If you do then it's normal and you can return the drive saying it doesn't fit in your notebook properly.

    Good luck

When the disk is ejected there must be a spring the thing pops out. The head goes in and out on a screw the whining you hear is this. When there is some read problem the drive resets to the start and seeks back out. This sounds bad on some drives. Lastly these notebook drives which hold the media, if you don't get the media in fully and flat I think it can touch something as it spins making a bad sound. I have never destroyed a disk with this last sound but it doesn't sound good as it is happening. I assume it must be the rim of the disk touching something in the drive the housing probably.
