    Hi guys,

I haven't played games for a while because I was busy with University stuff and today when I was playing Battlefield BC 2 I noticed the temperatures to rise more than usual.

I have owned this notebook for around 6 months so it has never seen Summer yet. Im from Malta, so it gets rather hot here. While gaming in a room @ approx 23 degrees Celsius the GPU reached a max temp of 94 Degrees and the i7 CPU reached a max of 90 degrees on one of the cores!

Please also note that I ALWAYS game with a cooling pad (the Belkin one). the last time I gamed (around 2 months ago) ... GPU never got over 87 degrees and CPU .. well I never really checked i guess.

I never have framerate problems or shut offs etc ... I just want to know if it is normal - if it is related with the increased heat in the room. I don't know what I can do for it to run cooler while gaming because for the next 4 months the heat here will only get WORSE!

    Cheers

You could try to repaste your laptop but that requires removing the motherboard. Most likely there is some dried up crummy TIM on the CPU and probably thermal pads on the GPU. Also doesn't help that it's 1 heatpipe cooling a 45 watt CPU and a 19 watt GPU.

repasting is definitely not something i wish to do. I still do not know whether it is normal due to the room temperature. Anyone else experiencing similar issues? ... if it is an issue :p

IMO the GPU is too hot. The CPU is bit on the toasty side, all Clarksfield i7 run hot.

I've opened up a couple 15R and its generally the poor application of TIM and dust clogging up the cooling system that cause the overheating.

My Studio 1747 with the i7 820 will overheat and shutoff if I play games 1-2 hours straight during the summer. I have to have the air conditioner on to keep it cool enough. It gets to about 81 C while gaming, but it seems like the main problem is with cumulative heat retention in the case. As I'm playing I can gradually feel the touchpad area getting warmer and warmer, and once it gets very hot I know I have to take a break before the computer shuts down. One thing I found helps is to create a power profile with the max processor state (under advanced options) set to 50%, all this effectively does is disable speedstep (auto overclocking), which keeps my computer about 10 C cooler. I can switch to this profile if my computer is getting too warm. It's a pretty crappy solution though, and I've been desperate to find other ways to fix this issue (which brought me to these forums).

I've seen this issue from day 1 of the laptop being brand new, so I know it's not a dust issue (or paste?), unless dell has horrible manufacturing processes. I'm probably just going to splurge on a nice powerful cooling pad since taking the computer apart seems like too much work for what I have time for at the moment.

I have not have any problems yet, such as the laptop switching off etc. but it is worrying me. I mean ..it is not even summer here and its this bad :S I had this notebook for just 6 months, so it is quite new and I don't think it needs any repasting, unless ... like you said fwbfwb ... Dell has a really bad manufacturing process.

I was thinking of trying a new cooling pad such as the Cooler Master Notepal X1 ... does anyone have any experience with this? At the moment I am using the Belkin curved pad with an 80mm fan. The X1 has a 120mm fan which spins at higher RPMs .. so it should provide better cooling right?

I have played some Battlefield BC 2 single player to test this again ... and these are the readings from HW monitor.

Room temperature was around 25 degrees celsius.

Also, is it possible that this increase in temperature is also related to updating the drivers recently?

I would go with the two cooling pads at the top of this page Newegg.com - Laptop Accessories, Cooler because they are the absolute highest rated and have excellent reviews (one is just a bigger model then the other). I'm about to get one if I can't find a solution soon.

The way the 15R is designed, or most laptops, a cooling pad won't make much of a difference unless it has been resting on your bed. As I stated, repasting would probably being your best bet.

cpu temp get around 80 is quite ok.. mine around 70. once reach 80 i will stop playing.. as for GPU the temp is around 60 for my N5010.. icore5! i using zalman nc2000 so i think not much different but sure got improvement for lasting my laptop. re-pasting is the best option but will void the warranty! inspiron got this issue when cpu usage hiked then the fan start spin around 3k rpm then ur temp increase to around 50-60 with idle mode.. as u notice explorer.exe eating the cpu usage up to around 20! i flashed A13 can't solve this problem yet but now my temp r around 40 & hdd is around 30! i will vacuum the ventilation part but do as for ur own risk. (electric static) the best temp i can get!

thanks for replying ngkhanmein. It is the CPU which is making my GPU becoming this hot in fact. even if I am not using a GPU intensive application, but my CPU is stressed, then you can see the temp go up for the GPU.

i7s run hotter than i5s, its a fact so I would say that my system would by default be generally warmer than yours. You have really good temps! However, you don't need to stop playing if your temp reaches 80 .. CPUs are made to run hot, especially in notebooks.

Now that I have bought the cooler master notepal u2, I have seen an improvement in the temperatures. but still .. after an hour of gaming battlefield, GPU goes to a maximum temp of 96.

I din play that games but nba2k11 my temp got reach 90-93 once only with all setting high & enable all but AA off only.. i7 hotter than i5 slightly only.. sandy bridge icore7 the temp will be above around 50! ur icore7 should show 48-52 then is normal.. (idle mode ur temp should be no different with icore5 but once any program u run then the temp will be different should be higher cos quad core working at same time) once reached 80 i will switch off my baby! c the attachment files.. dun get scare by the temp showed 127.5 °c cos it last less than 1 sec.. i think error reading but other dun have this case! im special. now u noticed the 3800 rpm meaning my fan is spinning & very frustrate with it. sry for my bad eng. in the meantime, this is idle mode after quit the pes2011 & explorer.exe ate my cpu usage! my turbo boost at 2.80Ghz the highest from 2.53 toward the high end! but guess what now working fine.. i flashed A13 bios the latest! 11.5a RC3 ati driver! enable mlaa setting at regedit! i del eset smart security to MSE!
