Hello, my I just recieved my i700m and I have a ticking sound coming from the hd that is driving me nuts. Over on notebookforums.com some have also complained about it but there are no updates on the dell site regarding it. However on some of the other models with the same hd I have there are fixes which I find weird. Any help would be much apreciated.

If it really bothers you, send it back. There's no self help for this one. If it's really bad, if could mean the drive is in the process of failing.

Some of the higher RPM hard drives will have this clicking noise. Unless a firmware update is available, there probably isn't much you can do about it except for returning the computer.

Listening to CD while working helps your too busy trying to remember the words, you don't hear no clicking at all. CD I am listening to movie sound track of "Enigma" 2001 from John Barry (Raise The Titanic). I just got done watching "The Day After Tomorrow" for the second night in a row, but that was on my RCA F38310JX4 W/S that's
fully integrated with a line doubler and a Progressive Scan DVD changer on my HDTV.

let me guess, you guys have Hitachi hard drives? I do too, and Dell is sending me a replacement HD (non-Hitachi) as we speak. the clicking noise isn't normal and its better to get a replacement before it completely fails. dell didn't ask a whole lot of questions, so they must be aware that the Hitachi seems to have this problem. All dell said was do the diagnostic test. The HD passed, but i told them clicking wasn't nromal and i wanted a replacement before it completely failed. so they are sending a new one. IBM has a firmware update for the Hitachi hard drives for their computers. I ran it on mine (the HD's are the same model and the firmware is for the Hitachi HD models), and it indicated i had the newest firmware. I didn't find any information on Hitachi's website, though. Anyways, Dell will send you a replacement. It sucks, but it's better to do it now. I also ran Hitachi's HD test utility and it gave me the same thing. i have 7200rpm drives and they don't click. clicking is bad. dell probably will wait to since it isn't a safety thing, b/c the 700m is new they probably don't want to lose sales if they start recalling the Hitachi HD. So they are just letting people call in if they have problems with the HD. just my opinion
