Hi all,
I just got my 8600 earlier today and I already love it.Everything's good, except for a bit of keyboard flex and screen leakage, which I'm sure is just paranoia...
Anyway, I downloaded i8kfangui, and messed about with it. However, it seems to have problems detecting my current CPU speed, and more worryingly, my GPU temp. DIMM temp also shows up as blank. Do I need to install something else? I'm using the 9600 pro turbo with 129MB RAM, and the omega drivers.
I'm thinking of mildly OC'ing my GPU (yeah warranty issues; I know) so temperature detection would be nice.
Thanks in advance!

The 8600's GPU overheats as it is, so you will definitely want to modify it. I talked about this in the modding section. My signature has my results. It is very easy to do and has a huge payoff, even increasing battery life.
GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x256 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120 -
Check in the options menu of the program there should be a spot to turn on dimm and gpu temps.

@Andrew
Yep, read all about the mod. However, Malaysia (where I'm from) doesn't have such materials readily available. I'll have to hunt for them, or else play UT2k4 in a freezer... hehe.
@winters
Thanks for the tip! Must've been tired out after installing the required software to notice the options. It works perfectly now.
Thanks again for your help guys. I think I'll post my super-pi results somewhere soon. It's a 2GHz PM. -

All you really need is copper and loctite. The arctic silver and acetone are extra, really. You can find copper at a hardware store, look for sheet metal. Loctite, or anything with cyanacrylat, is easy to find as well.
GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x256 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120 -
just did the GPU mod today, but a little differently than the tutorial floating around.
I just used a .025" (.75mm) piece of copper plate, and just spread arctic silver on both sides, and the gpu die. and i used super glue to glue the copper plate on.
I thought the locite was just a adhesive... why do you specifically need that kind?
-
Evo: Hah, just realized you are the same guy I'm talking to at notebookforums.com . Anyway, you don't need loctite specifically, bad wording on my part. What temps are you reading on your GPU in gaming?
GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x256 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120 -
Andrew, wuts ur name in notebookforums?
b4 the mod, my gaming temp was about 120-130 celcuous (literally off the charts in i8kfanGUI), and now its about 80... deffinitely a big improvement.

Ok, I've got a question: Why do I need the copper plating? I thought it's the thermal compound used that doesn't transmit heat effectively enough? What is the current material used? Aluminium?
Oh yeah, 3dmark03 score is 2799, and 3dmark01 is like ~9300. I suppose I do need the mod
And a little OT: The battery keeps going on and on and on... With wireless on, it looks like I'm set to go for over 4.5 hours... -
If you take a look inside, you will see a "thermal pad" being used to transmit heat. This pad actually insulates somewhat. Copper is a much better heat conductor. Even aluminum would be much better. You could try that if you can't get a hold of copper.
GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x256 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120 -
Oh I see... a THERMAL PAD??! The designers must have been drunk or something when coming with this
I suppose I should do the mod, but I'm really scared to open up my notebook. I'm going to be using it in college, and out of my home country. Where can I find a good guide to opening up the 8600? ut2k4 doesn't play too well with medium-high settings so I guess overclocking would be one of my major projects
-
KLTYE - I haven't modded my vid card (warranty issues), and its the same as yours. I WOULD NOT recommend overclocking it unless you do that mod. When I'm playin UT2k4 with everything maxed out, it stays right around 195 to 200 degrees F. Not sure what that is in C, but it's really damn hot!
When I'm just browsing the net and stuff it stays around 130 to 137 degrees F.

Ya, just like my signature says, it would get 100 degrees celcius (212 degrees fahrenheit) but now the highest it goes is 75 celcius.

here is the link for a keyboard fix

this is for the video card.
This tutorial is good enough just to relieve the heat. If you want to overclock it, consider the additions I put in the modding section to cool it further.
