Just went round and round with dell today trying to get an upgrade on my xps 1730 from the 8700 to 8800 .Spares parts quoted me a price of 2000 usd to upgrade.Tech support said 2,000 for gpu seemed high. Then he checked ebay and said he saw a card on ebay for 1,400 .The last gentleman took the cake after leaving me on hold for 15 min . Came back and said .I am happy to inform you I am unable to upgrade your Graphics card .When we asked to speak to a manager .He keep us on hold for over an hour and never pick up .I have no desire to sue dell but if they never come up with a graphic card upgrade program is this fraud? I assume the offer to sell the card to me for the 2,000 is all they are legally obligated to do. They promised to offer a upgrade path .They did not promise an attractive upgrade path .

2k price is to stop people from ordering one.

Price will drop once Dell offers the upgrade program like they were supposed to.

If Dell does not offer it, I think you have a great reason to ask for a full refund.

On M1730 owners lounge thread, there's a guy who bought it for about 850 from spare parts after mentioning about the upgrade program on dell blog.

Send a proper email and try calling back again inquiring. 2000 dollars is unacceptable.

What terms did the upgrade program list when you agreed to initially buy the laptop with an upgrade in mind?

Looking ahead, Dell engineered the XPS M1730 chassis to handle the thermal and power requirements of the most powerful next-generation graphics technology. Dell also will offer a graphics upgrade program when next-generation graphics processor technology is available.

The thing that annoys me is I called Dell in the first month to return the laptop .The rep said when the New card came out he would give me the new card for a nominal fee at most 200 dollar. He advised me he would update my account to this effect .When I called back no note on the account . Kind of blame myself for not following my gut and returning it in the first month .

200 upgrade just aint gonna happen IMO.

    850 does seem reasonable though.

PM the guy who got the upgrade, and see if he can give you is contact info. You may have to read quite a bit to find the page on 1730 owners thread.

realistically you could buy a new desktop with an 8800 for less than that or you could build it for even cheaper.... with a quad core...

But we are not talking about desktops, laptop =/= desktop. There is a price you pay for the size and portability.

Was your chat with dell when they said 200 dollars for the upgrade through email so you have proof of this? or was it over the telephone.

Bought it when first came out managed to get 300 of right away and another 150 of becaue there was a xps coupon that worked on the xps 1730So ended up paying 2,550 for the xps 1730 .I thnik I got a decent deal on the system bt th 8800 is a deal breaker for me . If I get a refund what kind of deals is dell giving out now .
