Smooth sailing here with Cover Flow. I'm using iTunes (7.4.2) in Mac OS X and Windows XP. For reference I have over 6,500 songs and about 620 albums. When I first open iTunes, the Artwork loads. So there can be some lag initially, but nothing significant. And after all the Artwork is loaded, there is no lag whatsoever, no matter how fast I scroll through Cover Flow.
There were problems with Vista and earlier versions of iTunes, supposedly those issues have been resolved. I don't know what to say except download/install the latest version of iTunes/QuickTime. Even if you have the latest versions, a reinstallation may still help. Maybe defragment your drive too.
Peace,

If I am not mistaken, I believe iTunes has a tendency to be "laggy' in windows. I know on my older laptop it takes a little while for it to come up.

if anyone is having the same proble update your nvidia drivers that solves it

I've upgraded my drivers, and it's still horrily jerky.
Performance everywhere else is great though.
driver version is 7.15.11.143 ny Nvidia, is that the same as yours?

I'm desperately trying to get away from 'iTunes' on Windows not least when I don't buy songs on the iTMS or own an iPod. It's an absolute system destroyer in my experience. Even when idle and minimised it's chewing ravenously at the heels of my resources.
The only trouble is, having tried both 'Songbird' and 'Media Monkey' as highly regarded alternatives they just aren't that good as media players. For music alone, maybe, but certainly not as multi-disciplinary as 'WMP' or 'iTunes'.
Presently I'm using 'VLC' for audio/video playback and 'MP3Tag' for editing. Both lightweight and powerful... if not quite as pretty or intuitive.
The pace of my system has improved quite astonishingly because of this. I can even run a podcast on one of the screens full screen in my dual monitor setup whilst browsing the web on the other without the computer grinding to a halt, curling up into a ball and crying iTears as it used to.
iTunes Cover Flow very laggy on Vostro 1700 (see specs inside)
