My itunes is running extremely slow. does anyone hve any suggestions? my desktop is slower than my laptop now and it runs iTunes really smooth. even the jewel case view is smooth. iTunes was slow from the get go though on the laptop. and my video card is much faster too.
desktop -
1.8 duocore
4 gigs ram ddr2 dualchannel
vista 32
256mb 7600gt nvidi evga
laptop -
2.0 duocore
2 gigs ram ddr2 (dual channel?)
vista 32
256mb 8600gt nvidia
i don't see how 2 gigs(well really 1.5) of rammakes that much of a diff. on an application. Ihaven't installed any games at all either on my new laptop. really, iTunes is the only big app i have installed since i have gotten it.
any suggestions?
oh yea, i use a program called tuneranger to sync my lapop to my desktop so my laptops iTunes library is a mirror of my desktop. and no, i am not using the "share over network feature". the music is physically on my laptop.
EDIT - its really only the jewel case vew that is slow. that is why i'm thinking its the vid. card. and i have all teh vid. card settings all the way up.

Does updating the video card driver help? Try that, it might work. What is the speed of jewel case if your video card settings are at normal clock?
Does your laptop experience any other problems with other graphical intense programs? Maybe games? -
What's the speed of the HD in your 1530? And 2GB of memory will make a difference because Vista is a memory hog and so is Itunes.

Install the best drivers and utilities from here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=193815

Your desktop does have double the RAM and almost certainly a faster hard drive.
-
he has plenty of RAM...iTunes is just trashy software and horribly coded...just like everything Apple it sux
-
I did update the driver... hmm....
Well, the hard drive i got is the 250GB, and the speed was like 5400 or something like that. the HD in my desktop is a 320 and the same speed. i guess i need to get some ram from newegg or tigerdirect and see if that helps.
And vista is a memory hog so i bet that is what it is. also, iTunes isn't bad. It organizes your music really well. and a really nice interface. Though, i do agree, it could be written a lot better. -
iTunes is poorly coded on Windows. Actually, ALL Apples applications for Windows are terrible. lol
iTunes always ran like crap. In Vista it was even worse because when I opened it, the window would be solid black, I'd have to minimize/reopen to get it 'normal'. So I got rid of it for a few months.
Recently downloaded it again and it running flawless.
Specs don't seem to make a difference in my experience. Because even the high end workstations at work are not able to run that crappie coverflow effect smoothly.
Try the 169.01 or 169.09 drivers.
But, A Led Rock has a very accurate opinion. -
iTunes v. 7.5 works fine for me now. Before, CoverFlow was laggy with poor FPS, but I upgraded to Vista SP1 and video drivers 169.04. Perhaps one of those had something to do with it.
-
id say looking at those specs the desktop will outperform that laptop , if not atleast be equal.. Remember laptop hardware is not as powerfull as desktop.
-
While using cover flow back and forth on my desktop, I can see the HD activity light increase significantly.
So memory might help, better graphic drivers might help, but better programmers at Apple will certainly help. -
I have a m1530 and iTunes coverflow was awfully slow. I found new drivers at the dell support site yesterday, released 18-Aug-2008. Installing the new Nvidia driver solved the issue. iTunes now works well for me.

I stopped using iTunes a few years ago on my Windows machines, it was just a big piece of crap (the windows version at least). The OS X version seems considerably faster (I still use it under my OS X leopard partition). And I think Apple does it on purpose.
-
I'm not saying iTunes is great, I'm just reporting that the new Nvidia drivers released by dell on 18-Aug-2008 solved the slow and stuttering experience of cover flow in iTunes.
A lot of people are stuck with ipods, zune is not available outside US (I think) and creative just seem to have lost it completely imo. My first mp3 player was a 6gb Creative Nomad Jukebox with 4hr battery lifeI then upgraded to Creative Zen Touch 20Gb with 24 hr battery life. My wife got an ipod nano and it does seem nicer than the creative players I've had.
I mainly use itunes for my wifes ipod and to get HiRes coverart to my mp3 collection as Windows Media Center / WMP11 doesn't really provide any decent cover art.
My main audio listing device these days are my Nokia S60 phones like N80ie, N91 and N95. They have mp3 player, podcast client and there is even a beta version of a Nokia Audiobook Manager which is quite nice - even with the small bugs. -
Can I recommend something?
Media Monkey
I've been using it for some time now, it's very fast (even with my terrible specs {1ghz proc, 128mb ram} and ~5000 songs) - and it syncs iPods no hassle - just enable disk use in iTunes and then nuke it -
what about videos. does media monkey do videos sync to ipod?
-
I do agree with previous posters. For some reason iTunes just runs slow on Windows period! Under OSX It seems fine of course. I would use it if It wasn't for its slow speed. For now I use WinAmp.
iTunes on my (M1530) is really slow
