the history about the laptop is that the lcd was cracked and replaced by a pawn shop and wouldn't work afterwards. which was a misdiagnosis because the 2nd dimm slot is non-fuctional (shuts down after green led flashes a few times).

so after i removed the 2nd ram it finally booted up but no video during bios or before/after windows loads. it constantly remains black. i figured the inverter was bad but since the parts were so cheap i went ahead and ordered a new inverter and video cable for the laptop. the video cable arrived first so i replaced it and still black. then the inverted arrived and replaced that, still black.

i was almost positive it was the inverter after various google searches but now i just don't know what to do. the laptop is functional because i'm able to hear the windows loading sound. i haven't been able to test the external vga but i'm under the assumption it works.

does anyone have any other suggestions? only other thing that could be wrong is the lcd but since this is such an old model paying $70 for a new lcd is not worth it imo

    thanks

Does it work on an external display?

i wasn't able to confirm wether or not it works because i had no vga cable/monitor to test it out at the time. i'm under the assumption that it works though.

lets say it does work and functions as should. what would be my options at this point in resolving this problem?

personally i think the lcd the pawn shop replaced it with was a dud or incompatible somehow. i mean the lcd screen lights up but there is no video signal being sent to it at all.

If you assume that it works on an external display (ie the motherboard isn't bad), then yes, I'd also conclude that the pawn shop botched the repair and you've got a bad/incompatible screen, especially given that you replaced the inverter and display cable.
