So I configured a new inspiron 1420 early this morning (around 3 am) and managed to get an awesome price with my student discount before they fixed their pricing mistakes =)
Intel core 2 duo 1.5 ghz
windows vista home premium
midnight blue color
2gb ram
hd glossy 14.1 inch widescreen
intel graphics media accelerator x3100
160 gb 5400 rpm sata hd
integrated intel next-gen wireless-n mini card
integrated 2 megapixel camera
15 mos mcafee
6 cell battery
1 yr warranty
built in bluetooth
dvdrw drive
including tax and shipping - $1083.74!
my questions are:
1. will the wireless-n card work with the other types of routers? i'm going to college this fall and i know they have b/g networking there
2. will i be able to upgrade my warranty and add completecare accident protection later on? i can't afford it right now, but by the time school starts i'd like to add it if possible.
3. will the integrated intel graphics card be sufficient for someone who doesn't play any 3D games?
and just so you know - i've seen pictures of the spring green and midnight blue laptops online and the lid looks nothing like the picture. the midnight blue is a really deep blue, and the spring green is more of an olive green.

1. Yes, wireless-n is backwards compatible is b ang g I believe
2. Yes you will be able to upgrade your warranty later, must do it before your warranty expires though
3. Yes, integrated is fine for games like the sims 2, it just isn't for those that play FEAR -
Regarding warranty questions you should really call Dell and ask them.
Complete Care is supposed to be bought at the same time you buy a new computer. You will note if you go to the Dell website that whereas there are options to buy extended warranties right there on the web site, they do not allow you to order Complete Care itself online separately from a new computer. If you follow the links and everything, you get to a page where they basically ask for your contact information because they want you to talk to a representative. This to me indicates that whether or not you can buy Complete Care later than with the purchase of a new computer is decided on a case by case basis.
As to how long after the initial purchase you can buy it, I've heard all kinds of figures. Some of them were "1 month", "1 year", "any time before an accident", "before your warranty expires", etc. None of those figures were ever substantiated by any kind of official documentation from Dell.
For a reliable answer, call Dell and ask them. -
