My screen is broken (long story... lent laptop to a friend, came back all screwed up). my question is: a) with a replacement screen, do I need a new inverter as well, or no and b) if so, would most replacement screens come with one???

Don't need an inverter as well.
Most replacement screens do not come with an inverter unless otherwise specified.

How is it messed up? Is it actually physically broken?

yes, it is cracked in several places, and i can't see the lower quarter and right most portion of my screen. :( AND, my warranty's up. it was up a while ago. there are replacement screens on amazon and ebay but some came with an inverter and some didn't. i've been looking at the service manual online, and it seems a fairly simple procedure to fix, but i could be wrong.

Swapping a screen is a fairly easy task, and as long as you follow the service manual closely you should have no issue.
A WXGA screen for that laptop should cost no more than $100 shipped, but you should be able to get one as low as $60-70 shipped if you shop around
