    can't boot from them
    or read them in vista

    Have you tried the upper/lower filters fix? You can download the executable from Microsoft.

    Try re-installing the drivers if that doesn't work, then it's possible you have a hardware issue, you can just purchase a working drive for less than $25 on eBay.

    anyway i manged to fix it by cleaning the laser eye with a toilet paper :D
