OCing of the 8600M GT can be done via 2 types of softwares: RivaTuner or Nvidia Ntune. I have successfully OC'ed it and it ran well, nice and cool highest temperature of just 68*C OC'ed (see sig). Make sure you have your vents clean and if possible, apply thermal paste on the GPU core for even better cooling. The 1720 is capable of handling heat well, and it's not under Dell's list of notebooks with defective Nvidia cards, also due to the fact how it's been designed for the 1720. It has never hit 70*C for the past 2 years of my 1720.

Now as for your lid, you may want to try using different drivers, I'd recommend the ones from LV2G, DOX's 185.85 driver. It's pretty stable and overclocks very well.

Let me know if you need more info.

LV2G = Laptop Video To Go. It's a website which has modified drivers referred to as DOX drivers (as that was the individual that modified them).

    I went easy to 600/1200/500. rivatuner, DOX 185.85, win 7 x86
    4860 something 3DMarks... (default settings)

im ordering a NZXT LX Cyro and my 1720 is in pieces right now waiting for some Arctic Silver. i'm stuck with the 8300 though, dont know how I can get rid of it if i got a 9300 / X9000 (kickass SomeFormOFHuman)...

hopefully i can OC some more and actually be able to play crysis warhead, mass effect / etc.

You should be able to play those games anyway, just not at native res + high settings......
