    Hi

I have an Inspiron 1750, on which I've replaced the base and palmrest (the old ones were physically damaged
    around the screen hinge)

It all now works fine (and dosn't threaten to come apart when I open it up) - the only thing that dosn't
work is going into standby when I close the lid (This worked ok before my 'repair' on Win7, Centos6 and
Fedora 14 - now it won't standby under any OS, so it's not a s/w issue)

Trouble is, I don't know where the lid switch is (I cannot see it) - I understand its a magnetic switch, so does
anyone know where the magnet is, where the switch is, and where the cable between the switch and the b/board is? (or maybe its physically part of the power switch?)

    thanks....

There should be a magnet embedded somewhere along the screen bezel. The "switch" should be right under it when you close the lid. At least, that's how it is in basically every other Dell laptop.

    thanks, that helped.

I found the magnet in the screen lid by running a small screwdriver along the screen edge and feeling for it (It's about two inches to the right of the camera)

Knowing this, I looked under the palm rest in the same position and the only thing that could be the switch was a very small component at the edge of the express card carrier. I removed and reseated the carrier (a small plug/sockect onto the mainboard, and all now works as expected.

    problem solved. thanks.
