    Hi,
I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 5110 B64F45 with core i7 processor and 500 Gb 5400 Rpm hard drive. It works fine except that there is a constant hdd sound even when the Hdd is idle. The read operation slows down the laptop performance and the sound is annoying. From the performance monitor i figured out that Win 7 writes to C:\$Logfile (Volume Log) and C:\$Mft (NTFS Master File Table).

Here is what i have done but fail:
    disabled Windows Search
    disabled Superfetch
Switched the bios hdd settings from Ahci to Ata

Noone seems to be working! Anyone have similar problems? How should i prevent this annoying writes and have a normal computer??

Do you have a Seagate drive? Updating the firmware can greatly quiet down Seagate drive. You can also try QuietHDD to adjust AAM/APM settings.

I want to completely stop it. I don't want to lower the rpm or noise. My previous laptop wasn't doing such a thing. I can always hear the HDD read sound and it's freezes the laptop for a moment. My previous core2 duo laptop works faster than core i7 because of this. HDD is Seagate Momentus 5400.6 but i guess there are no new firmwares.
