I'm writing on behalf of a family member who has an out of warranty, three year old Inspiron 6000 with an integrated graphics chip.
A couple weeks ago, the display started to have a strong red cast to everything. Even when booting up, the DOS text that displays before booting into Windows is red instead of white. In Windows, it's as if the display has a dark red filter over the screen. It's like a CRT monitor with one of the color guns having failed. Whatever the cause, it's not a software thing. The display settings are all at default values.
Then, once the machine has been on for awhile, maybe 30 minutes or less, the screen goes black. I don't think this is a sleep mode thing, in that I can't wake it up again. I'll have to check settings about that when I can.
Does anyone have ideas about what the source of this problem might be? Onboard video? Display panel? Something really trivial? What might it cost to fix?
Thanks for any help.

The color cast may be due to the video connector becoming loose from its video connector. It's under the keyboard and easy to get at. Just press it down.

I'll try that. Is this to say that I don't need to remove the keyboard, I can just press the keys?
