i have an inspiron 6000 and i recently replaced my lcd screen. after the replacement of the screen all my settings got messed up and my icons and start menu are larger and i no longer have any options for my hibernation and standby modes. they no longer exist and i cannot use them either. i was hoping that reinstalling windows would help but im not sure how. im pretty sure that no CD came with my labtop and i was hoping some one could assist me in reinstalling windows thanks

you can restore back to factory settings by holding Ctrl + F11 on bootup or call Dell and pay $10 for them to send you a Windows CD assuming you ordered direct from Dell.

This sticky thread by SouthernGirl covers all of this http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=23363

I have another question about reinstalling... is it easy to find all the latest drivers on Dell's website? And is there really any performance gain made by reinstalling a fresh copy of WinXP on Inspiron notebooks? I know they install a lot of crap, but in my knowledge, they are just programs that do not work in background and don't take any ressources (except some disk space) if you don't use them.

Yes it easy to download the drivers. If you go to the support page and put in your service tag it will give you all the drivers. A fresh install should free up some system resources. Good Luck.

Alot of the junkware does use resources unless you specifically make them where they don't start up at all (using msconfig). Doing a clean install will increase your performance and hdd space (make sure to delete the spare partition if you reinstall windows since it will no longer be valid.)

I'm not sure if you are wanting to do a clean install or restore it, but here is the instructions for both

If you want to do a clean install:
You have to call dell and order a backup XP CD. It costs $10 when you order it with your laptop, but I'm not sure how much it will cost since you already got your laptop.

If you have a retail XP CD that is the same version as what you order (meaning if you ordered pro, you can't use a XP home cd, you'll have to use an XP Pro cd), you can use that cd to do a clean install. When it asks for you registration/product code, you can find that on the bottom of your laptop.

If you are wanting to restore your computer back to factory settings with the junkware:
When you see the dell logo when booting up, hit ctrl + F11 at the same time. This should take about 10 minutes.
