Honestly, even if it did fit (I HIGHLY doubt it does), it would be more work than it's worth.

Yes, it will fit. M1710, M90, and E1705's have same form factor. There is difference in bottom housing, and mobo (mobo layout is the same, but XPS, and M90 have port for docking, and E1705 does not.)

thanks all for the help, so would the lights on the xps base light up? i mean would the wires for the lights plug straight into the 9400? i dont think it would matter about the similarities between the xps base and the 9400 base as the lights are behind the front speakers and the touchpad with xps on it looks removable so i could just fit the touchpad instead of all the rest. i would get another 9400 lid and base but they are so hard to get hold of- well they are this side of the pond UK.

I don't think the 9400 has any provision for lights on the lid.
The motherboards are different between the 9400 and the XPS M1710.
For example the extra port for docking that Achilles mentioned.
There would be no need for Dell to make the 9400 motherboard so it could control LED lights, since there are no special LED lights on that model.
