    dell inspiron 9400/e1705
    dual core pro
    160 gb HD

    this is what it's doing:
worked fine for years. sat on clean dry table last night. i push the power-on button, and i get 2 quick green indicator lights, the power light and the hard drive light. tried unplugging powersupply from everything for a few minutes until the light went out. same lights. tried a different battery, plugged in computer and with second battery plugged in without pushing power-on button, i get the charging indicator light flashing quickly in this order: green then 4xOrange.

after 5 minutes of this with the second battery with the 1xGreen-->4xOrange quick flashing on the charging indicator, the charging indicator now is staying on at all times and it is Green.

I push the power-on button in this condition (second battery, previous flashing of 1xGreen-->4xOrange then to solid green) and the laptop shows the original indicator light code of power (green), hd usage (green) and then all the indicator lights go off. just like the original battery indicator but the charging indicator was on until the power and hd lights flashed green. pushing the power button makes the laptop do this: power (green), hd usage (green) and then all off. the entire flashing happens only once and takes about 1 (one) second.

Listened for "spinning up" sounds, there are no sounds. it flashes those two lights and then nothing. screen does not light up. no sounds. no nothing.

    please help.

Motherboard's probably gone kaput. Did you try the usual stuff like reseating the RAM?

honestly i don't know what's usual... never attempted repairs on anything but desktop computer cooling fans and power supplies. took it to computer repair paid $40 for diagnostics and they confirmed what you said. the best man at my wedding though, he gots a 1525 inspiron for $100 needs optical drive... wonder if my 1705 dvdrw will fit it?

motherboard is likely fried. not worth it to try and fix it... will anyone be needing genuine dell 9400/e1705 parts??
screen is a XGA top dollar option... HD and dvdrw are mine... everything else is up for grabs.

the repair tech said it was the most well-maintained machine he had ever had in front of him, for a 6yo computer, it had almost no dust. i loved that computer. the tech and i had a little funeral for it and now i have to move on....

so will that inspiron 1525 accept a HD and DVDRW drive from a inspiron 9400/e1705

    anybody know ?

For starters, please don't bump your thread more than once in 24 hours, it is against forum rules.

1525 will physically accept the E1705 hard drive, but you'll need to reinstall the OS, it has completely different drivers. Also you'll need to remove the drive from the caddy and use the 1525 caddy.

The 1525 will take the DVD drive as well, but it might not screw in properly and the bezel might not line up properly.

    Hi,
My name is Rajesh and I represents DELL in Social Media Forum. It bad to hear that your MOBO broke on your computer , but I would suggest you to either you can go for replacement of motherboard ( price you can check from DELL for refurbished one but that would be costly affair) or you can go for the computer that you are getting in repair shop for bad optical drive , You can add external USB optical drive on that to make your computer work. As it will not work for both of the computer’s optical drive will not be compatible with each other as it will not fit in chassis.

    Thanks,
