It seems that the Latitude D800 and Inspiron 8500/8600 as well as D600/600M are identical notebooks. Is there a difference? Also, what is the difference between an IBM Thinkpad T40 vs. T41? It is not clear on IBM's website. Thanks.

Latitudes have a internal metal casing unlike inspirons.

T41 is an update to the T40. The T41 has a cool feature in which if you drop your laptop or run too fast with it the drives shut down to prevent data loss.
-
The T41 uses faster memory (333 vs 266).

Scroll down to the section titled: "Personal System Reference". The file called IBM ThinkPad Notebooks - 20 Nov 2003 (tabooks.pdf) has all the nitty gritty details about the Thinkpads.

Two different features;
1. Add HDD protection while under shock or vibration
2. 1000M network card vs 100M of T40
