I just finished formatting my hard drive and installing Windows 7 Pro (coming from Vista Ultimate). My computer will not automatically switch between running the internet via wireless, and running on the ethernet cable.

Here's what happens... I have the ethernet cable plugged in, I unplug it and it should automatically switch to wireless and still be connected to the router, but it doesn't. And it does the same thing vice versa. Ethernet cable is unplugged and I am connected wirelessly to the router, I plug the cable back in and it is still running on the wireless. It should switch back to running through the cable.

I am on Verizon Fios if that matters... there isn't any software that needs to be installed for it, as far as I know. Is this just a setting I need to change in Windows? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure about this but I don't think Windows has a preference in network adapters.

I'm slightly confused by your question. What exactly is wrong? Do you want Windows to automatically change between adapters? Or did you want a seamless connection (i.e. no drop when you take out the Ethernet, because it'll go directly to wireless)?

    Um.. YES! :p

I never really payed close attention before but I think it was switching adapters. With the ethernet cable plugged in, it showed the 2 computer icon in the tray. Then when I unplugged that cable, the icon would switch over to the 5 bars wireless icon. If there was any gap in connectivity during the time I unplugged the ethernet cable and the time it switched to wireless, it was not noticeable.... meaning, it was either seamless or almost instant.

Have you set up the wireless connection already? Is the wifi card switched on?
can you see any wireless networks?
