Hi, I'm having a problem and hope this is the right place to be?
I have a Dell Centrino... My intel proset 2100 adapter is not picking up my or any local networks.
My OS is Windows2000. That being said, I called intel for support and their response was, the device was OEM and i could not receive any support from them. They advised me to call Dell, reached an operator.. after sitting on the phone for 45 mins, he picked up the phone and hung it up.
I called back to get the response, none of their Techs are trained on/for 2000. thank you have a great day.
That leaves me here...
The Problem:
intel proset 2100 not detecting my wireless connection (BIG red Circle and slash over icon lower right corner)
What Ive done:
enabled/disabled to no avail.
REinstalled software.
updated drivers.
uninstalled software
updated drivers
reinstalled software.
Ive gotten to the point of being able to enter SSid and config a profile, but after creating profile.
I CAN'T click the "scan" for networks button. Its grayed out and wont let me. I still have the red circle showing the device is NOT enabled, when i check, its showing its enabled. When i disable it, it shuts it down completely.
Please any help, ive been on the phone with tech support for 4 hours with no help
I have my other laptop which has xp and detects it automatically and am having no problems connecting to the internet.
It has to be something with the way in configuring something.
Thanks all.

Well the other thing is...what are you letting control the wireless connection. Don't let Windows control you wireless connection!
There should be a program where you downloaded the drivers that will control the card/wireless access. Once that is installed you can configure that program to pick up the wireless connections.
If you can't get that program or if you already have it...try to let windows control the wireless network and see if you get anything.
The reason it might have the Red circle with the cross-bar is because either
1) The wireless is being controlled by another program.
2) Once you enable the card, it might require a restart of the computer.
Try these options and let me know.
BTW, welcome to NBR!!! -
how you doing usafdude, thank you.
Ok, im familliar with xp, being it xp does all the work for me.
I did use the software to configure below:
You see i created a profile, also the scan button wont let me scan for networks.
As for the circle, its not a enable/disable x im used to.. below:
Is it possible i have something else trying to use it?? when you say dont let windows, am i?
Thanks -

Are you on battery? Or are you plugged in to the A/C power?
Does it have the Dell Quickset settings? Or power management? It looks like it might be disabled through the power-settings.
Also you might want to check in the bios to make sure the wireless in enabled.
I don't know what else it could be.
You might want to go to the control panel and go to the network settings and find the wireless settings and try doing it through windows.
LMK!
Hope this helps. -
You the man usafdude! It was somehow disabled, i hit dell quickset setting and it some how reenabled it. All working good now!
geez, i should have just come to the forums in the first place, took all of 20 mins to get the solution.
Thanks! -

No problem...yes, these forums are faster than Dell tech support.

To OP and USAFdude02 your making me think more..
Yea.. forums are best place.. anyone who goes to howardforums could tell you that..
But now you leave me to a bigger question.. I used to think when SP2 came out and windows could control the Wireless network, that THAT was better then a 3rd party app controling it.
Are you saying I am mistaken? I would think having a 3rd party app in the memory or task bar would be worse off then letting windows controll it.. since for me, once its connected, never had a issue.
Can you fill me in, I will be having the Intel Pro Wireless A/G and not sure if I should use ITS software cause its better.. (If so, why?) or just let windows do it and uninstall yet another useless annoyingware that takes up taskbar space. -

1) Wouldn't let me do the encryption I wanted
2) Dropped signal all the time
3) Still takes up memory (not as much)
That is why I use the one that comes with the controller.
For me, memory is not an issue, I have 2GB of memory, even when I game I don't take up all of it, so that is not an issue for me. I can also check more statistics on my connection using the 3rd party program.
Also after a while the icon becomes "inactive" which then it gets hidden on my taskbar. So that also is not an issue.
That is why I use the Intel Pro Set program.
Really, it is a personal preference, I have just heard and helped alot more people that have had problems with the wireless networking through Windows. -
think of it this way, MS builds the driver/app as general as possible for compatibility. the driver/app that comes with your card (intel, atheros, whatever), was made for that card, by the company that made the card (theoretically).
just my 2 cents.
i use the proset app about 99% of the time.
