I've seen the studio 17 laptop but I am looking for something more to gaming. Maybe not as extreme as the m1730. Has dell quit making 17 inch laptops built for media and games?

Precision M6400 Maybe? I know they say Quadros aren't meant for gaming, but that's just BS. Whatever the specs line up with will perform very similarly to its GeForce counterpart (i.e. FX2500M = 7900 GTX).

I'm hoping they update the 1730 soon.

They'd dumped the XPS line, and are going to use it to mean "premium" for the other two lines. Presumably we should see something like a "Studio XPS" soonish that will hopefully have a better GPU.

The Radeon 3650's not terrible, but it's not even as good as the 8600GTs you could get a year ago (and those were extremely underwhelming even a year ago...)

That sounds all too plausible, though it SHOULDN'T be. Everything they need for an update is here now. The new chipset, FSB bumped CPUs, bumped GPUs, and LED screens are all shipping right now. I can walk into Best Buy today and walk out with an updated system.

Geez, here I go again ranting! BEST BUY is beating Dell. That would have been unheard of two years ago. Even with the 1705, that was MONTHS ahead of anyone using the Geforce 7900GS, and every system prior to that was similar.
