    is intel turbocache (flash cache module) present in my laptop

    hi ppl,
    i have an inspiron 1420 laptop. in the bios it shows an option like enable Flash cache module (FCM) which i enabled by default. but i heard in this site itself that u dont get a FCM unless u ordered one (i havent). then y is this setting in my bios. does my system has the fcm installed ????

    AFAIK Dell is not offering turbo memory on their machines.

    but i found in its manual that they are giving instructions how to remove it (they are stating that this component is optional )

    Its strange...there are also drivers for it on their support page...but no there should be no FCM in Inspirons...however you can upgrade your rig with one, but it won't that much of a difference.

    My guess is they planned to add it to the Inspirons when the product was developed (afterall, Dell doesn't build these machines), but they later decided to omit it for the reasons that are shared by OEMs like HP.

    Since it takes quite a while to prepare documentation and test products they probably decided to leave it. There is also the possibility that Intel will release updated cards that do offer some advantages and this gives them "drop in" capability.

    If you want to be absolutely sure you can always open the wireless access panel and you'll see the card isn't present ;). The BIOS setting is irrelavent when the hardware isn't present. Similar to how my BIOS allows me to enable and disable the Cell radio even though I didn't order the Cell radio with my computer.

    The BIOS option is there whether you have the module or not.
