in my notebook vostro 1400 , is it normal that when i'm connected with wifi, the connection signal goes from "excellent" to "regular" or even "deficient" (and other states) all the time (while staying in the same spot of course)?? it also goes from 54.0 Mbps to 48.0, 36.0 or even 24.0 all the time. This happens both in vista and xp, and any driver i have tried.

i have right here another notebook with a intel 3945(inspiron 640m), but the connection always stays at "good" or "excellent" with 54.0 Mbps

i'm concerned that it can be that it has a problem, something bad or faulty causing bad reception.

No its not normal at all. for example when im at my room, where my router is, it can sometimes vary from 54mbps to 48mbps for just a sec, but nothing else, i have the same wifi intel pro 3945abg.

u should REALLY check the drivers, there are some ****ty versions around, and ALSO i recommend u to NOT install the whole intel wifi manager, cause it's crappy as hell. Just install the drivers by the "disk method", do you know how to do this?
actually im using 11.5.1.15 that work pretty well (these are the last ones)

okey, right now i have the 11.5.0.32 so i'll update them..

what i liked from the intell pro/set was that when i0m in a public network it sends a warning if i have shared folders.. don't know if the windows one does that. tough is not big deal

i'm gonna try now uninstalling the wifi after downloading the new ones from intel's website first.

ill try the disk method.. (manually trough device manager, have to unzip first the drivers)

mmmm the windows doesn't have that i think...
try doing that, i've read in some forums about problems like the one's you describe, and that's their apparently solution for that. hope it works!

okey.. i had to upgrade them.. if i uninstalled, windows kept autoinstalling the old drivers ::X

i'm using the windows wifi manager now, and signal intensity says "low"
bandwith says 48.0- 36.0-24.0-18.0 and goes up and down, staying mostly at 36.0

cheking the other notebook with winfows wifi manager:
it says low(with intel proset it showed excellent ¬¬ )
    and it always shows 54.0

    yeah, upgrade... mmm
mmmm extrange, because with low signal u can't have 54mbps...
the thing is, if you are next to the wifi point, then it can't be less than 48 and a very good or E signal.... so or u have a router problem, or the wifi board is fkd up

damn! just uninstalled everything again, rebooted and the stupid thing keeps auto installing the drivers! (this time the newer ones)

so how many meters should a signal reception start to go below 48.0 ?? at least now i'm one meter from the router and stays in excellent and 54.0 (i think it did too before)

it's relative... dependes on lot's of factors, like the xmit power of the router, the antennas, the walls, your receiver.....
but if u are getting "LOW" signal, u can't be getting the full 54mbps, do u get it?

the less the signal, the less the bandwidth.

SO now its running stable or not?

if i'm near the router it works okey!

when i'm like 15 meters in another room, and now that i'm using thw windows wifi thingy , it always stays on "slow" but the speed speed still changes between 54.0-24.0

i'm intrigued the other notebook always stayed at 54.0... might be different driver versions, i'm gonna check that

it's doesn't make a difference in this case... cause the signal shouldn´t vary like that, no matter what os you have.

and also it's no logical that a wireless board reports a slow signal and a 54mbps speed... cause that's not the way it works.

check it, and if you go with the other lappy to the other room, u have very good signal? or low? or what? it's strange, because the intel pro is one of the best signal receivers for this laptops...

also check if you have and in-alambric phone around, and what frecuency are you using... but if the other lappy is ok, i don't know why is it.

A friend of mine is having the same problem.
I'm using now both my and his computer, both use a 3945abg under vista 32b, in the same room, one close to another.
I'm now connected with a 3/4 signal strenght and can identify 6 other networks, he doesn't get any signal.
From time to time he gets a very low signal of one of the networks I see, but it only lasts few seconds.
    I tried updating his driver.
I set his options same as mine.
We're not close to the router since it's the Student's Residence public net.
    Any clues?
