Sorry if its a repost, couldn't find anything, but is it worth buying extra warranty for inspiron 1505? I am normally pretty careful with my gadgets and electronics, but ... having last minute doubts. I'll use it at home 75% of the time. thanks.

You just never know what could happen. I'm usually careful too, but being portable, it could get dropped, or something sopilled on it, so IO got accident protection. It could be a lemon, or something, so a warranty is useful.
-
Do it, I always get the 3 year extended accidental full coverage. Covers your notebook even if you throw it out the window. (which sometimes you may feel like doing)
Dell has always been good about sending me a replacement part, once my cd/rw fried, next day i had a new one, same with my power bar. I would recommend you keep it under warranty for however long u plan on having it.
-
COMPLETE CARE IS A MUST.... GET IT!!!, everything is easier to replace when you have this kind of insurance from dell. Of Course, you don't have to admit that you throwed it out of the window on purpose, tell that you were trying to get a wireless signal, lol :0

I understand what I am about to say is a case of hear/say, but I have heard from a few people that Dell laptops have some motherboard issues. Even though i'm drawn to the 1505, if i were to buy it, I would buy completeCare incase of any motherboard issues. Unless this is a problem of the past.
-
Well, actually you don't need Complete Care for a motherboard issue. That would be covered under the basic warranty, Complete Care is only for ACCIDENTAL damage. It doesn't cover acts of god though, that is why itsn't available in Florida.

ahh, you are correct. My mistake

I think if you are going to upgrade the RAM then it voids the warranty. Is this right or does it just void the warranty for the RAM?
-
I was also thinking of getting standard 1 year warranty and then upgrading it after the first year. don't know if comes out to be better/worse/same deal though. has anyone actually used warranty on their dells (other than accidents) within first 2 years? -
as i understand it does not void warranty. You can put anything you want into a dell, however if that part is faulty they will be less than helpful in finding a fix for you
-
Yes, my Inspiron 8200 power connector (not the brick) went out on me in 18 months. I had the mail in 3 years warranty. Called dell they send the FedEx to my home with mailing label and box. As they promised the laptop was returned to me with in 72 hours.
Anything you carry around shoud buy the maximum length extended warranty the company offer. No matter how careful you are thing do happen. -
-
Thats cool. I bought Crucial RAM from Newegg.com and knowing that replacing the RAM I have now does not void the warranty is awesome
-
Putting in new RAM does not void your warranty

if u have not bought ur laptop already. DONT buy the warrantee then. i've had my 1505 for a month and today i opened a letter telling me i can get the 4 year protection thing for with 2 discounts (only one instant) for $235. I beleive it is was $400 when i bought my laptop.
Actually i just came to this site to see if people had many laptop problems after the 1st-2nd year. Im probbaly going to get it, my dell rebate of 250 just got here as well so i may just use the rebate to pay for the insurance. -
Nice news. I'm surprised I havn't heard about this rebate already while reading about these machines. Thanks for the update on that
-
I was careful with mine but the hard drive was faulty- that was $180 right there. Then of course you have accidents with drinks and drops etc.
My other lappy has seen two keyboard replacements and two rebuilds after having soda spilt on it (younger bro) -
Better get Complete Care guys....
-
thanks everyone for taking time. i've ordered mine with standard warranty. I will extend it at the end of year 1, hopefully with discounts
BTW ebay has amazing deals - coupons of all kinds ... -
You'll be sorry. The 3 year and 4 year warranty is so inexpensive. I got another 12% off the total system by getting the 4 year (EPP purchse).
-
Who the hell is going to keep their current laptop more than 2 years anyways? I would guess most people will move onto a new one within 2 years for sure. Maybe even yearly. The residule return on a laptop is HORRENDOUS also, so whty bother. 1 year is plenty IMO.

Taking a radical leap from the conventional wisdom presented in this thread, I shy away from extended warranties myself. Most people never have to spend money for repairs equal to the cost of the warranty.
I read a Business Week article that had some very telling information about extended warranties. The article claimed that 100% of Circuit Citys profits come from extended warranties, and Best Buy was something like 30 or 40 percent.
If youre going to get an extended warranty, make sure the accidental coverage part of the plan is what you think it is. Dont get stuck spending hundreds extra for something that doesnt cover the most common threat to youre computers life user malfunction. -
You can NOT upgrade hardware inside a dell. If they find out, your warranty will be voided. However ram is diferent. They allow you to upgrade ram. I just talked with XPS Rep Eric the other day. He explained all this to me.

Nueromancer--my lappys last for years because I buy the latest and greatest and most expensive when I finally buy a new one. This way I get maximum usage and maximum warranty for my notebooks. I have the same philosophy with cars. I may have to retire my 15 year old Cressida this year even if I don't need to!
is it worth buying extra warranty for 1505?
