I am a business student looking for a good notebook which will last me some time.

    1. is the 640m any good? is it portable and easy to use? are there many problems with it?

    2. can it compare to the thinkpad t60 14.1 sxga notebook?

    3. how does it compare vs. the lattitude d640

    4. will the 640m be given a dedicated graphics card in the near future? (april)

    thanks guys.

wait for the T60 14inch widescreen (others said it)

in anyway, the T60 is just more superior compared to 640m or the D640

It is not the slimmest nor the lightest 14.1 around, but it is portable and can be compared to most regular 14.1 notebooks. DELL Inspirons are known for their value for money (in terms of performance and features) and not for slimness, hardiness or lightness.

No inherent problems if that is what you mean

Depends on what you are looking for; T60 has the dedicated graphics option and 640m doesn’t, if that is not a problem then yes you can compare those two. Inspiron is the cheapest notebook series of DELL. As I said before they will give you the best performance for the money, but they are not the sturdiest. IMO Think pad T60 has better build quality, but that doesn’t mean 640m is flimsy. I’m not exactly sure about your market prices, but where I live, a 640m is like 2/3 the price of a T60 for the same configuration. If you can get a 640m with several years of complete care warranty for the same price as a T60 then I don’t see any reason not to get a 640m

You mean D620 ? Well, Latitudes are known to have better build quality, other than that I think more or less the same. You have the option to order Quadro NVS 110M dedicated graphics card (which is somewhat slower than X1400) with D620.

I don’t think so, 640m (if DELL decides to keep the model name) will most probably ship with the next generation integrated Intel graphics solution for the upcoming Centrino Pro platform.

If you looking for value, go for the Dell Inspiron. If you want quality, go for the Thinkpad. The build quality is far superior, and it is, on the whole, much more portable, rigid and relaible.

Also, the Intel Integrated GPU limits the use of this laptop somewhat. Ocassional gaming or Modelling if you do any, is out of the question.

Having an ATi Mobility Raedon X1400 is very useful. It may not be best GPU in the world, but it is far more useful and powerful than the Intel GMA, and the power consumption of the two GPUs isnt that different, and the T7200 C2D CPU is a lot faster than the T2300 found in the 640m.

But as I said, the T60 is a lot more expensive.
