So from reading the forum, I get:
1. Many Inspirons have a problem with headphone jack/noise
2. Many Inspirons have a grainy screen texture
3. DDR2 not DDR3
4. The LCD screens used are cheapo
5. Crap customer service to get remote
6. Horrible shipping times
7. Delays for no reason
Was it worth it after all? I am feeling somewhat disencouraged by my purchase now.

I want to cancel...
-
lol. i noticed that to. but i really like my 1520.
- im not complaining about my vid card performance but id really like money back if i paid more for something crappier
- i dont reallly see whats wrong with my lcd screen. no dead pixels and iono whatsup with that grainy thing lol.
- i didnt get a remote. are we supposed to? if so then i shall bug dell for that.
- my laptop was shipped 1.5 months earlier than estimated
- headphone jack noise is inevitable. the creative ear buds arent great. when i put my cheapy 10 but reliable sony earphones the noise i heard was 50% less loud.
overall dell experience: meh. -
It's ok. Girls who actually give a damn about computers are hot. Game on. -
Guys, come on... I love my 1520, A LOT!
1) Get decent headphones. I have Sennheiser PC 151's (headset) and I get absolutely no noise not unless my volume is jacked up on my actual headset (which is easily avoidable).
2) Mine doesn't... your eyes will get used to it even if it does.
3) So what, are you planning on gaming with your laptop? Even if you do plan on gaming, are you planning on playing graphic intensive games? If so, it really does not make that much of a different. I've been gaming it up with my 1520, and it performs so well in CS:S and F.E.A.R and other games.
4) I don't think so...
5) Honestly... will you even use the remote?
6) Not for me, but for some people, yes. **** happens.
7) Haven't heard about this... -
disencouraged definitely has more impact than discouraged
I think its not crap at all.. considering its price! Sometimes i feel I shouldve waited a bit more for the 1520. -
1) Like the above poster said, my get headphones that actually cover your whole ears instead of just earbuds type and you'll notice there's barely any distortion at all.
2)For people with 1280x800 resolutions, yes this could be a big deal. But as you go higher it becomes less annoying and looks very nice when gaming. As the above poster said, its easy to learn to live with it since it looks so good.
3)100$ compensation
4)I guess, but at least it's made in 2007 unlike the new HP's which were made in 2005 where it has very crappy viewing angles.
5)Not everyone has the same experience with CS. For me I got 100$ dell coupon for finding out that I couldn't even get the remote in the first place unless I placed it with the order with the laptop. Which I can use to get the bluetooth one and then some.
6)My 1520 was expected to come 17-22 of July. It came on the 12th. I order 6/29. So it actually came EARLY.
7)Well that's what you get for trying to wait out the best possible deals. It's best to just order right away then yell at dell later on why theres better deals now... =P
Anyways I think the people that got their laptops are very happy with it and the people that haven't got theirs... We'll they're PO'D -
I hope its not bad enough to bother me.... if it isn't actually ignorable or I can't tune it out while listening to music it will.... but I hope it's not like that. I notice a lot of computer nerds are incredibly anal. Like, borderline OCD. I just read some posts where they were complaining about how their stickers were put on crooked or have a scratch or something... and they're afraid to take them off because they're afraid of damaging their notebook and want to return it to have it done.... afraid to take off stickers....
lol. I can kinda imagine them as the type who sits at his desk and keeps going back and forth stressing and replacing their pencil to lie either parallel or perpendicular to their stapler, trying to figure out which way is more proper.
I don't care about screen graininess. I don't care about a barely noticeable sound. I do care if the thing is reliable and holds together over the next few years. As long as nothing breaks and function is at 100%, I'm happy. I'm not going to sweat the details on a t7300, 8600 gt notebook that could be had for under a grand. If those components and others essential to it's function show to be durable and last, I feel I got my moneys worth. -
of course people are going to piss and moan about the small problems, considering the great price, and that the majority of people are completely satisfied, therefore, dont bother to post anything. Yet people with problems post, making it seem like everyone is having a problem with them....

Inspirons are all crap
but that's what warranties are for
Gosh makes me rethink whether I want to get an Inspiron desktop though -
MAn, everyone's typing so much. I just skip it when i see an essay written.

Yeah, i got nervous having my notebook on the way and hearing so much negativity surrounding it. Well I recieved it two days ago, 15+ days early, and it's living up to all my expectations. All my hardcore computer friends seem to think it was a great deal, a very respectable laptop for the price. Pfft, was nervous for nothing.

in short you get what you pay for
dells are well known for their price : performance ratio
as sess has said in the above post they cant be compared to high end asus altpops but they are quiote capable of living to c 4-5 yeard with ood care
theyre budget consumer laptops with a punch -
A few people have an issue and they post in every single thread about it. They end up making a lot of dupe threads with polls which makes a small issue for one person seem very large.

1. Legit problem. I haven't read too much about it, but if that's a big concern for you, by all means.
2. Heard this from a few people, then heard just the opposite from others. It will probably depend on which panel you get. Dell does source from several suppliers
3. Well, this is the fault of some misleading advertising. It's disappointing yes - but if you're unhappy and cancel, what other laptops in the price range have GDDR3 at 700MHz? I've only heard of the G1S (Compal doesn't, the C90 doesn't either) and that's definitely above the 1520's price range.
4. Okay...
5. Not an Inspiron problem.
6. Again not an Inspiron problem.
7. Related to #6. Again not an Inspiron problem.
So based on even the last three points, would it be fair to say you're more disappointed in the delay and Dell's customer service than a laptop you don't even have yet?

i've never had any problems with my inspiron, no noises from my headphone socket, screen looks great, fair point on the ram but there isn't many notebooks that run ddr3, and i've always had great customer service from them, i tend to use the chat room function though because those guys tend to know a bit more than the phone guys, shipping time for my notebook was about 3 days from order as it was a dell outlet one

The stock F3Sv-A1 scores 2300-2400.. The stock dell 8600GT scores around 2700-2900...
The maximum on stock reported here is 2906

It has twice the shaders of the 8600GS. I would expect at least one and a half times the 3DMarks. The 8600GS has been overclocked to give 2700 3DMarks, at least. A mere 500-600 point lead is inexcusable. -
1. same as my HP business notebook, haven't try the IBM.
2. hope not on mine... but I see silk screen effect on my HP too, not on the IBM.
3. 1520 problem?
4. probably the same for others brands.
5. agree
6. that's because the 14/15/17xx are new. At least they are easily to get than the Wii.
-
The 8600M GT is memory bandwidth limited so obviously cutting the memory clock down to 400MHz from 700MHz will have a detrimental impact on performance.
The 8600M GT has about 58% more shader power than the GS so at the very most, it could only be about 1.5 times as fast. Add in the effect of the lower memory bandwidth and the 25% or so performance increase over the GS doesn't seem so terrible. You can't expect performance scale perfectly with core clock speed only. -

2. never noticed that on my 1501, 1505, 700m, 6400 and people's pictures of the screens looks fine to me.
3. theres no ddr3 laptop. if you mean the GDDR3vsGDDR2 business people got $100 from that , thats like a cheap upgrade from 8400M GS to 8600M GT. You can always crank up the memory clock if you want.
4. why do you say that?
5. i don't think anyone was suppose to get a remote for free to begin with.
6. wasn't a secret, they had a preliminary shipping date during configurations.
7. unlucky for you i guess -
Can't wait to try the headphone jack with my Shure E4c's if its not clear with those then I don't wanna hear its the headphones your using!!
-
Just cancel my order for a 1420 and bought a Thinkpad T61. I just don't want my laptop to fall apart after 6 months.
-
none of my inspirons ever fell apart in 6 month,, or 1 year,, or 2 years,, or 3 years
is the Inspiron crap after all?
