i chose vista home premium with my 1330..

does it come running in 64 bit mode??

is the vista disc that dell ships with the system able to install in both 32bit and 64bit mode??

The version of Vista you get is 32bit. You are able to get 64bit Vista and install it; it is a challenging, but rewarding, process however.

Its not free (technically) although there are methods of downloading that I won't discuss as there is alot of controversy over the legality of it, even though they will still validate the installation with your key.

I believe it can be purchased through MS or other retailers of Vista.

If you have a legal copy of 32 bit version of Windows Vista, you can install a 64 bit version of Windows Vista using the same key provided with the 32 bit version as long as the edition installed is the same i.e., if your 32 bit version is Home Premium, you can only install a 64 bit version of Home Premium and so on. You would also need to ensure that your old copy of the 32 bit version of Windows Vista is uninstalled (not present on other partition or hard drive) in order to activate the 64 bit version of Windows Vista.

How do you acquire a copy of the 64 bit version of Windows Vista? This is where it is challenging as neither Dell nor Microsoft will offer you a 64 bit disc or a download link. Your safe bet is to borrow a 64 bit retail disc (rather than downloading a copy from the internet) from your trusted sources (they have nothing to lose as you will be using your key), make a copy of it (for future installations) and install it.

Installing a 64 bit version by using the same key and edition as that of the 32 bit version and activating it after ensuring that the earlier 32 bit version is uninstalled is perfectly legal as Microsoft themselves will approve and activate your OS. However, I am not sure what is the legal way of acquiring a 64 bit version of disc/download in order to install the OS.

As far as I am concerned, my notebook does not have more than 3 GB of memory and most of the devices (printers, scanners and other peripherals) I end up connecting for work purposes do not have 64 bit drivers for Windows Vista. Therefore, I am sticking with the 32 bit version of Windows Vista for compatibility purposes.

If you buy a retail edition of Window Vista Ultimate, you usually get both 32 bit and 64 bit discs. Can anyone confirm if Dell will also provide both the discs if you buy Windows Vista Ultimate from them?

U need to search and read....the same information is covered over and over every 3-4 days. Simply hit your search button and type in things like 64bit or 64 bit upgrade and you will be amased on the available information...that is recent.

Everyone here, including myself, will jump in to help but...you will never be able to understand it all unless you do a bit of background.

You can either format or reinstall over it. Since many try out 64 bit version by installing it in another partition or hard drive, it may lead to activation issues if both versions of OS use the same key.
